The data comes from:

• The UK Department for Transport (DfT), specifcally Table 6.1 from Transport Statistics for Great Britain: 2007 edition (4MB PDF file)
• The UK Office of Rail Regulation (ORR), specifically Section 1.2 from National Rail Trends 2006-2007 Q1 (PDF file)
• The US National Beaureau for Economic Research (NBER), specifcally dataset m03011aa - "Great Britain Railway Passenger Traffic Excluding London Underground 07/1920-04/1939; 01/1944-12/1948".

Data used as follows:

• 1921-38: NBER monthly data, summed by year
• 1939-43: No data available
• 1944-45: NBER monthly data, summed by year
• 1946-48: Mean of DfT data and NBER monthly data, summed by year. (They differ by less than 4%)
• 1949-2002: DfT data
• 2003-2005: ORR data

The DfT data actually runs to 2004. However, the last two years were revised, and said revisions are given in the ORR data.

From 1984 onwards, the point plotted at a given year is actually the last three quarters of the year given and the first quarter of the year afterwards. So, the point at "1985" is the year from April 1985 to March 1986.

Note: The data change of source in 1946 and 1949, and also a changes in methodolgy between 1985(/86) and 1986(/87); and between 1999(/2000) and 2000(/2001). The ORR data was collected in the same way as the most recent DfT data, and is directly comparable.
