Gavin Shoesmith is an Australian singer songwriter and virtuoso double bassist who rose to fame as bass guitarist in the John Butler Trio.

He initially formed an organic dance music band called Katamaran, based in Darwin. Alongside Shoesmith on double bass, the band comprised Mark Hoffman on didgeridoo and Grant Smith on percussion. In its one year of existence, Katamaran sold around 5,000 CDs.

Shoesmith's current band is The Groovesmiths, in which he plays alongside Matthew Wright (Drums) and Alex Dew (Guitar). Their music can be described as rhythm-driven Australian roots music.
