Gauge factor

Gauge factor (G) or strain factor is the product of strain and the quotient of change in strain gauge electrical resistance and unstrained resistance of strain gauge. Gauge factor is dependent on the mechanical strain ε of the strain gauge, the temperature of the strain gauge and the Wheatstone bridge.

The gauge factor, G, is given by:

\varepsilon G = \frac{\Delta R}{R} = \alpha \theta

G = \frac{\Delta R / R}{\Delta L / L} = \frac{\Delta R / R}{\varepsilon}

  • ε = strain
  • ΔR = change in strain gauge resistance
  • R = unstrained resistance of strain gauge
  • α = temperature coefficient
  • θ = temperature change
