[edit] Not freeware

Gateway is not freeware. A free (as in no-cost) download link was on the Legend Entertainment home site, but it was not to be redistributed. Here's what Bob Bates from Legend Entertainment replied when I emailed him:

Hi Eino, Like most IP stuff, this is complicated. The Gateway games were licensed products (based on Frederik Pohl's series), and Legend had the rights to distribute them only for a certain period. We did do a limited promotion where it was free for a certain period of time, but only for that period of time. Today, it's unclear who owns the rights to the games, although I am trying to sort that out. So I wouldn't characterize the games as abandonware, but neither are they in the public domain. BTW, I very much appreciate the responsible way in which you are handling this. It's nice to see ethical behavior still operating in the world! Thanks and best wishes, --Bob
