Gates of Paradise, (1989) is the fourth book in V. C. Andrews's The Casteel Series.

This is a novel about Annie Stonewall, the daughter of Heaven Casteel Tatterton Stonewall and Troy Tatterton. After being orphaned by a car crash that kills her mother and the man that she thought was her father, Logan Stonewall, ]. Tony Tatterton steps in and takes her to Farthinggale Manor to assist her recovery. However, he does not keep Annie's best interests at heart as he cuts her ties to her family with the exception of Drake Casteel.

Annie grew up in Winnerrow with her loving parents and Uncle Drake who she looked at more like a brother,her loud country aunt, and her half-brother Luke, who is her best friend. After having an fight coming home from Fanny's 40th birthday party Heaven and Logan get into a car accident leaving them dead and Annie a cripped orphan.

When being sent to live with Tony Tatterton, her step-great-grandfather, she is kept locked up in a bedroom with a dreadful nurse. But when Annie refuses to inhale the food the nurse requires, the nurse gets more exotic food and puts poison in it. Luckily Annie survives, and the cruel nurse lives. Soon enough, Annie is let outside and she wonders about the mysterious maze. And through all this, Luke has given no contact. One day Annie goes into the maze and finds a small cottage and thinks she hears footsteps, and then meets the Troy Tatterton himself. No soon later does Annie start to walk, but Tony urges her not too. Then, Tony comes in, thinking Annie is her grandmother Leigh, and try's to rape her. Luckily Tony snaps out of it soon enough. Later on, Troy tells Annie how he and Heaven had made love and that no doubt he was her father. She and Luke were not related. Soon Annie begins to go mad, and she realizes that Tony wants to keep her forever and ever. So Troy phones Aunt Fany and she comes to get Annie. Then Tony starts to scream that Annie is his, because he was Heaven's father and not that scumbag Luke Casteel, proving that Annie is his granddaughter. But still, Annie goes back to her old home in Winnerfrow. Then Drake comes and screams at her that she has put Tony in a deep depression and that she will ruin her life by doing this. No later does Tony die, and Luke and Annie attend Farthy for the funeral. The book ends with Annie happily making progress with her legs, and planning to marry Luke.
