Gasline, Ontario
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gasline is a small hamlet located within the municipality of Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada. Located about 6 km east of the Port's downtown core at the intersection of Killally Street West and Highway 3, the hamlet of Gasline got its name from its association with the transport of natural gas from early discoveries made under Lake Erie. This natural gas, which was found as early as the 1880s, played an integral role in the industrialization of the surrounding area.
Long a community with a strong agricultural base, Gasline was the longtime home of Gasline Elementary School which was closed down in the 1990s. While new houses have gradually been built in recent years, owing to the availability of large housing plots made from formerly farmed land, the community is still quite small, with only a few hundred residents.
