[edit] Inscription
There seems to be some confusion with the Greek inscription recorded in the article. The first part is indeed in perfect Koine Greek μηδέν λαβόντες ηργασάμεθα or ΜΗΔΕΝ ΛΑΒΟΝΤΕΣ ΗΡΓΑΣΑΜΕΘΑ (transliteration: medhen labontes ergasametha) which translates comfortably as "without receiving anything we toiled". Rather curiously it seems to refer to workmen who laboured without getting paid (?). The rest of the inscription is in perfect Modern Greek: κανένα νεκρό δε μας έδωσε η θάλασσα ούτε ο ωκεανός or ΚΑΝΕΝΑ ΝΕΚΡΟ ΔΕ ΜΑΣ ΕΔΩΣΕ Η ΘΑΛΑΣΣΑ ΟΥΤΕ Ο ΩΚΕΑΝΟΣ (transliteration: kanena nekro de mas edose i thalassa oute o okeanos) and means "neither the sea nor the ocean gave us any dead(????????)" which seems a bit nonsensical and is most certainly linguistically incompatible in terms of chronology. I found this incorrect version in several different pages about Garni but I can't imagine where this mistake originates from. BTW it must be an excellent site! Has there been any monograph on the temple's architecture and restoration? If someone has further information please add it. Armenia has wonderful monuments but unfortunately it is so poorly known in this part of the world (Europe)--Giorgos Tzimas (talk) 16:22, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
