Garyounis University (Arabic: جامعة قاريونس‎) is a public university in Benghazi. The University was founded on December the 15th, 1955 under the name of the Libyan University. The nucleus of the university was the Faculty of Arts and Education, which then had an enrollment of 31 students.

Since then, the Faculty of Science was established in Tripoli, the Faculty of Economics in Benghazi in 1957,the Faculty of Law in Benghazi in 1962 and the Faculty of Agriculture in Tripoli in 1966.

In 1967 the College of Higher Technical Studies, and the Higher Teacher's College were incorporated into the University. The names of these two colleges were changed into the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Education. Moreover, the Faculty of Medicine was established in 1970 in the city of Benghazi.

Later on, the Faculty of Petroleum and Minerals was established in Tripoli in 1972. The Libyan University was split into two independent universities.

All the Faculties located in Tripoli joined the University of Al Fateh while those located in Benghazi joined the Garyounis University.

Consequently, the following Faculties were established at Garyounis University. The Faculties of Science, Engineering and Dentistry were established in 1974, the Faculty of Agriculture in 1976, and the Faculty of Information Technology in 2006.
