Gary Smith is a avant-garde guitarist, improviser and composer from the United Kingdom. He is well known for developing dense extended techniques on electric guitar. Gary Smith has released close to twenty albums in solo, group and live settings with Shoji Hano, Rhys Chatham, John Stevens, Hugh Hopper, Masayoshi Urabe, Chie Mukai, Aufgehoben No Process, and Bill Fay.
Smith's playing style is informed by a diverse range of influences:
- The theory of 'organized sound' developed by Edgard Varèse
- The extended techniques for stringed instruments created by Iannis Xenakis
- The density and speed of compositions by Conlon Nancarrow
- The works of Giacinto Scelsi
- The harmonic structures of Maurice Ravel
- The proto-metal sound of Blue Cheer.
His music has been classified as free jazz, noise music, noise rock, and extreme music.
