[edit] Early life

Born and raised in San Jose, California, his father owned an orchard on Lucretia Avenue across from the current Valley Fair shopping center. Radnich was born with only three fingers on his left hand, which his mother believes may have motivated him in his athletic endeavors.[1]

Radnich attended Branham High School, where he was a star basketball player. Among the stories and urban legends is that Gary hit a shot from the corner of the court and then stopped to grab a drink of water from a nearby fountain while the game was still in progress.

His college career began at Brigham Young University on a basketball scholarship, but eventually transferred to UNLV. He became a notable as he drove a big purple Cadillac ("Raddy's Caddy") to impress his teammates and secure guest stars passing through Las Vegas for his television interview show.[2] Radnich graduated from UNLV in 1970.

[edit] Broadcasting career

Radnich started his broadcast career at KVVU in Henderson, Nevada. From there, were stints at KTXL in Sacramento, California and KMPH-TV in Fresno, California. From 1982-1985, Radnich served as the sports director at WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio, where he also called Ohio State Buckeyes football games. He has been a personality on KRON-TV since 1985 and on KNBR since 1992[3] His radio program runs from 9 a.m. to noon, and features a half-hour joint segment with fellow sports radio personality Tony Bruno at 10 a.m.

[edit] Personal life

Radnich lives in San Francisco with his second wife, former KRON producer Alicia Radnich, and their three children, Jolie, Isabella and Spencer. Additionally, he has three children with his first wife from whom he was divorced in 1990 [1]. Radnich drives a Jaguar, and frequently talks about it on his radio show.

[edit] Reaction and criticisms

In 2003, the SF Weekly described his radio program as "amateurish" and "incomprehensible" while awarding "Best Sports Talker" to his KNBR colleague Tom Tolbert.[4] In 2006 and 2007, the SF Weekly named Radnich "Best Sportscaster", noting that his broadcasts are "spontaneous" and that he "knows sports"[5]. However, in their 2007 review, the Weekly acknowledged, "The man has his share of critics, who knock him for everything from his sometimes adversarial relationship with the English language to his habit of talking about non-sports topics."
