Gary Flandro, PhD is an American aerospace engineer who currently holds the Boling Chair of Excellence in Space Propulsion at the University of Tennessee Space Institute. In 1965, he discovered that due to a rare alignment of planets on one side of the sun in the 1970s, that a multi-planet "Grand Tour" opportunity existed to allow a single spacecraft to explore the four outer planets of the solar system. This Planetary Grand Tour was exploited by NASA with the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 missions.
