Gary Ernest Bennett (born 4 December 1961 in Manchester) is a former English professional footballer who is most known for playing for Sunderland A.F.C. from 1985 to 1996. He originally started his career with Manchester City, but moved on to Cardiff City in 1981, without making any first team appearances, on a free transfer where he linked up with his brother Dave.
He left Cardiff for £65,000 in July 1984 to join Sunderland. Bennett went on to play 369 league games with Sunderland scoring over 23 goals before joining Carlisle United 11 years later. He later played in the Football League for Scarborough and Darlington (where he was also manager until being released in October 2001[1]).
