Garland is a town located in Penobscot County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 990.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 38.0 square miles (98.5 km²), of which, 37.8 square miles (97.8 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km²) of it is water. The total area is 0.71% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 990 people, 379 households, and 270 families residing in the town. The population density is 26.2 people per square mile (10.1/km²). There are 497 housing units at an average density of 13.2/sq mi (5.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.78% White, 0.20% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.40% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 0.40% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 379 households out of which 34.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% are non-families. 22.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 100.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $27,500, and the median income for a family is $31,534. Males have a median income of $30,057 versus $16,959 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,624. 20.0% of the population and 15.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 31.6% are under the age of 18 and 13.9% are 65 or older.

Garland was settled in 1802 and incorporated in 1811. It was named for the first settler Joseph Garland, who came from Salisbury, New Hampshire

The township was originally granted by the State of Massachusetts to Williams College, who sold it to a series of proprietors in 1798. It was originally called "Lincoln" after one of them, Levi Lincoln.

The town had 1,247 people by 1859.
