Gaon (village)

The Assamese word Gaon is used to define an area in Assam which is similar in meaning with the English word Village. Names of Assamese gaons (i.e. Assamese villages) usually ends with the following suffix term:
- Gaon: e.g. Amingaon (Amin + Gao)
- Pur: e.g. Madupur (Madhu + Pur); also Dispur, current capital of Assam
- Bari: e.g. Jalukbari (Jaluk + Bari)
- Hat: e.g. Jamugurihat (Jamuguri + Hat)
- Hati: e.g. Guwahati (Guwa + Hati)
- Tola: e.g. Beltola (Bel + Tola)
- Bazar: e.g. Panbazar (Pan + Bazar)
- Kata: e.g. Salakata (Sala + Kata)
Gaonburha is the term used to define the head of the village.
