[edit] Geography
The town of Gandevi lies in the prosperous southern part of the state of Gujarat. It lies approximately 50 kilometers south of the city of Surat, and 20 kilometers south of the city of Navsari. Gandevi serves as an important commercial and social destination for the surrounding villages of Devsar, Devdha, Kachholi, Dhamadachha, Kolva, Ajrai, Ancheli, Salej, Hathiyavadi and Ghanghor among others. The bigger sister-town of Amalsad (which is an important station on Mumbai-Ahmedabad Western Railway corridor) lies just a few kilometers away. The nearest city with an airport is Surat, and the nearest international airport is in Mumbai.

The area in and around Gandevi is blessed with very rich black cotton and clayey soils, ideal for the cultivation of mangoes and sapota (called Chikoo in India). In fact, the district of Navsari is the biggest exporter of the sapota fruit in India, and India is the biggest sapota exporter in the world.

As of 2001 India census[1], Gandevi had a total population of 15,843. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Gandevi has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy is around 81%, and female literacy is around 72%. 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
