Gamut (disambiguation)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term gamut originally referred to lowest note (the “gamma-ut”) in the musical scale used in medieval music, and then to the entirety of the medieval musical scale.[1] From this notion of a complete range, the term came to be applied to other fields, including as a completely general term.
In English this term most often is used in phrases of the form: "... runs the gamut ..." (often followed by phrases such as "from ___ to ____" or "of ___" which define the range that is being traversed).
Gamut can therefore refer to:
- Gamut, a range of colors which can be reproduced by a particular printing process, display device, or set of paints.
- Gamut, a complete scale in medieval music. See Hexachord, and Diatonic and chromatic.
- L. T. F. Gamut, a collective pseudonym for five Dutch logicians.
