Gamaliel H. Barstow

Gamaliel Henry Barstow (July 20, 1784 Sharon, Litchfield County, Connecticut - March 30, 1865 Nichols, Tioga County, New York) was an American politician who served as a U.S. Representative from New York.

Barstow moved to Tioga County, New York, in 1812 where he worked at his father's farm and taught school. He studied medicine in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and practiced. He was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1815 to 1819. He was appointed first judge of the Tioga County Court in 1818 and served until 1823. He was a member of the [[New York State Senate from 1819 to 1822. He was again a member of the State assembly from 1823 to 1826. He was New York State Treasurer from 1825 to 1828 and again in 1838-39. In 1830 he was a Supervisor of Nichols, New York. Barstow was elected as an Anti-Masonic to the Twenty-second Congress, and served from March 4, 1831 to March 3, 1833). In 1836 he was the Whig candidate for Lieutenant Governor of New York, running mate of Jesse Buel, but both were defeated by the incumbent Governor Marcy and Lt. Gov. John Tracy. He continued the practice of medicine and engaged in agricultural pursuits in Nichols, N.Y., until his death there. He was buried at Ashbury Cemetery, near Nichols, N.Y.
