[edit] Censorship in Portugal

Hi there!

Thank you for the extensive translation work it appears you've done on this article. I got stuck when the Portuguese version described a papal bull that doesn't seem to exist; maybe you found a way around it or know more about this subject than I do. (I haven't read your material thoroughly or compared it with the Portuguese version.)

A few small suggestions:

  • I'd recommend using edit summaries when making changes. In this case, it helps highlight what each revision changed so I can see the progression on the history page rather than seeing a wall of blank summaries.
  • Past events in encyclopedia articles are in past tense. (In 1933, something was passed, not is passed.)
  • Remember to capitalize months and other proper nouns... Have you read the manual of style?

Of course, I can always go over what you've done later. Grandmasterka 10:42, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

I understand the point the Portuguese article was trying to make, that even things from the Vatican were censored. It's just that, I couldn't find any evidence of the existence of that specific bull, and without it, that whole part of the article falls apart.
That's interesting info about present tense in Portuguese academia; I'll remember that. But on the English Wikipedia, the standard is to use the standard variety of English used by the first major contributor (or whatever fits the region of the topic, which doesn't apply here.) So, the translation should be changed to reflect the style of English originally used (including switching to past tense.) I hope I'm not too annoying to you... I really appreciate your efforts. Grandmasterka 11:27, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
I'll try and proofread it when I have time... Grandmasterka 07:35, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Maria Severa

Hi, Galf. I chose my username as a rough feminine form of "Severus," in reference to Severus Snape, a character in the Harry Potter books. I wasn't even aware that there was a Portuguese singer called Maria Severa until today. This history is very interesting to know and certainly adds a new dimension to my username. Thanks for informing me! -Severa (!!!) 20:22, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

You'd be surprised by how many users I've run into on Wikipedia who have Harry Potter-inspired names. It's always nice to meet another fan (although I'm sure, after the 6th book, I'm in a minority as a Snape fan — still holding out hope).
If Maria Severa was the subject of a film that's a classic of Portuguese cinema I think she would probably be deemed notable. There's an article about her on the Portuguese Wikipedia already so maybe you could go about translating it. Also, out of personal curiosity, was Severa a second given name, or was it the first of two family names? I've encountered "Severa" as a surname before (see IMDb search results).
I edit abortion-related articles as part of WikiProject Abortion, so, that's how I came across Portuguese abortion referendum, 2007. Thanks for helping to edit that article. We've had a lot of requests to update Image:AbortionLawsMap.png to reflect the results of the referendum, but, as far as I know, the law has not yet been enacted. Do you have an idea about when it will go into effect?
Regarding Censorship in Portugal, I'll see what I can do. Maybe I can help smooth out phrasing/grammar issues. :-) -Severa (!!!) 23:11, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
I've been interested in names for a number of years now, so, I'm aware that it isn't uncommon in Iberian/Latin-American naming traditions for a person to be given more than one given name — particularly with the compounds beginning with "Maria," which are references to traits and events associated with the Virgin Mary, as I understand it. But I've also read that an Iberian/Latin-American person can be given more than one surname (usually one from the mother's side and one from the father's). Correct me if I'm wrong about anything. I'm always looking to learn more about names.
Thank you for translating the article on Maria Severa Onofriana. I made a few changes, which I hope you don't mind. I also went through the Censorship in Portugal article and made some copyedits.
Personally, I like Nelly Furtado, particularly her guitar-oriented songs and her album Folklore. I'm not as fond of some her recent work, because I find it a bit too mainstream for my taste (I prefer indie), but some of her recent songs are undeniably catchy. -Severa (!!!) 18:09, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
Hi, Galf. I suppose I've gotten back up on the horse. Let me know if there's anything I can do for you on any Portugal-related article in the future, although I'm going on vacation from Friday-Sunday, so I won't be available during that time. I just thought I'd give you a heads up though. :-) -Severa (!!!) 02:57, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Portuguese Manual of Style

Alô. I've noticed some propositions that you have made for how to best name certain Portugal-related articles on WP:Portugal, and I agree entirely with you. I believe I also mentioned that we need someone to create a Manual of Style. It's a vast, time-consuming task, and there's too few members on WP:Portugal for anyone to carry it (and so far, no one but you offered suggestions on how to get it done). So, if you have the time and want to do it, would you be kind enough to start it? Even if it won't get complete, it will be a great starting point for everyone involved in articles related with Portugal.--Saoshyant talk / contribs (please join WP:Portugal or WP:SPOKEN) 13:46, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for telling me about this btw. :-) Regards, Húsönd 15:31, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Well, I'm not sure, I don't often participate in manual of style discussions. However, maybe you could have the Japanese one as reference. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles). I guess the same can be made to Portugal-related articles. By the way, I noticed that you're a native Portuguese speaker, so you may contact me in Portuguese or English as you prefer.
No mercy for accentuation flaws, hoooo.--Húsönd 20:46, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Obrigado a vocês, Galf e Husond.

...Pronto. Estou noutro parágrafo. Já me passou o patriotismo.--Saoshyant talk / contribs (please join WP:Portugal or WP:SPOKEN) 15:12, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] From Andrew Dalby

Yes, Galf, I'll have a look at the articles you mentioned. It'll be a pleasure.

In Garcia de Orta I'm inclined to change "medical things" back to "materia medica". So far as I know, "medical things" doesn't have any meaning in English. "Materia medica" is a real phrase that is used in English (at least by pharmacists), and it is the exact equivalent of Garcia's cousas medicinais. Andrew Dalby 16:03, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

I've had a look at the Manual of Style page and made some copy-edits. I hope they are helpful, but if not, feel free to revert me!
Thanks for telling me about the Censorship article. I'm looking forward to reading this carefully when I have a little time. Meanwhile, it seems to me a splendid piece of work. Andrew Dalby 18:53, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

You were right to nominate the version of the article Quinta das Lágrimas for a number of reasons including copyvio and advertising. I think you will agree that the current version is worth keeping after I expanded what was left and clarified the distinction between historical fact and legend. Please consider withdrawing your nomination based upon the improvements made in the revised article. --Richard 16:12, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your message. I have recently changed my vote to "Merge and redirect". Reasons are explained on the AFD page. --Richard 08:09, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
I suppose I could support that, whoever, as I nominated it, I will abstain from voting. Have you seen my EXCELENt work on Censorship in Portugal ? :-) Actually, I need a proofreader, specially american and proud of it! Can you take a few minutes to read it and try to spot unexplained concepts or stuff needing clarification? Galf 08:18, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
Yes, but not tonight. It is 1:30AM and I am headed to bed. Perhaps in the next few days. --Richard 08:24, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
I noticed your changes to Quinta das Lágrimas. Are you ready to withdraw your AFD nomination? --Richard 14:45, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
Dis you get enough sleep? lol I dunno how to do that, can you help? Hou do you like the article now, anyway?Galf 14:49, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

No, I'm still sleepy but it's time to get up. I stayed up too late last night (Wikiholic). Just put a comment below your nomination saying that you withdraw. Put Withdraw in bold like this: Withdraw and explain why. I will want to restore the stuff about the legend somewhere and then link to it from Quinta das Lagrimas --Richard 14:56, 16 March 2007 (UTC

I'd prefer if that is kept with Ines de Castro and this article stays on the protected building. I'll have an infobox and photos soonGalf 15:01, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Olá!

Obrigado pela oferta! E também pela correcção. ;-) --Lazar Taxon 19:00, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Infobox for Portugal

Sure, I'd be happy to create one! The basic coding was "borrowed" from the Protected Areas WikiProject and then fiddled with; gotta give credit where it's due. Just lemme know. :) --Ebyabe 12:03, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
Yep, that should get me started. I copied info into one of my sandboxes, so now I can play around with options. I'll letcha know when I've got something semi-presentable, or if I have questions. :) --Ebyabe 12:48, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
I got something cobbled together. It's very preliminary, but check Template:Infobox IPPAR. It's a starting point, at least, and you can give me more ideas on fixes for it. :) --Ebyabe 13:50, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject Films/Style guidelines

Hello: I did not want to start a delete war with you and actually could care less about such, what I consider, trivial stuff. But I knew that my edit was correct, hence I added the note about reading the article. I was quite surprised at your next edit because you provided no explanation. Let me say one thing: in your Wiki edit experiences you will have to make sure you are conforming to Wiki policy and deal with the many Wiki personalities. The item you bring up is trivial. Best, Luigibob 09:40, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

One more thing: I just re-read your comment. All I have to say is "read the article", it's all there. I do not want to be asked questions about copyvios and potential problems with this article. I have my own problems with some of its contents. Leave me out of any further discussions vis-a-vis images in article. Thx. Luigibob 09:49, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re. Savage islands

Hilarious it was, but still vandalism. :-) I'm gonna warp that to WP:BJAODN though. Regards, Húsönd 17:00, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] How I got to Quinta das Lagrimas

Hi! I have a tool called CorHomo that I use for disambiguation work. It shows me all the pages that link to a dab page and helps me disambiguate the links to an appropriate target. That's how I found Quinta das Lagrimas. :-) (PS I did a copy-and-paste to get the name of the article so I wouldn't misspell it, but the accents didn't make it.) --Tkynerd 14:08, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Adaptive Mutations in Bacteria: High Rate and Small Effects

Copying comments from this page:

Suggestion, create a bio article about the lead author, Lília Perfeito (aka L. Perfeito). She seems notable under the guidelines at Wikipedia:Notability (academics). The article received international attention [1], [2], [3], [4], [5] - probably hundreds of labs are busy trying to reproduce its results. Here is one scientific citation index that mentions the paper's importance (this goes to academic notability): [6]. It's true that WP doesn't generally have articles about journal articles per se, no matter their importance (altho there are a few under the category of genetics experiments). The findings are quite notable - it's more a question of WP article organization. Best wishes, Novickas 21:27, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Juba

[edit] Speedy deletion of Image:Censuraindex.jpg

A tag has been placed on Image:Censuraindex.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I8 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons under the same name, or all references to the image on Wikipedia have been updated to point to the title used at Commons.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Sdrtirs (talk) 13:03, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
