Stavros Galanopoulos

Stavros Galanopoulos was born the 1946 in Corinth and was educated at the acclaimed "Greek Art School" in Athens. Early in his career, his work focused on the areas of advertising and theater design. A shift in his career path at age 30 pointed him in the direction of interior design and decoration. He became fascinated by the design and decor of old Greek traditional houses and began painting them. After a few years he went to the island of Santorini and in 1986 opened his gallery in Oia Santorini. He has enjoyed his work on the beautiful island ever since. His sculptures and paintings have been sent all over the world to many fine connoisseurs of Greek art.

3-dimensional illusionism

The play between sensation, perception and representation fascinates me. Within my work, I try to set up relationships that confound our conventional understandings of ‘realistic representation’ and replace them with ideas about visual language and subjective experience, a kind of visual trickery in witch painted forms seem to be real. I make work which can be seen as both sculptural and pictorial, where the 3-dimensional illusionism of the image conflicts with the actual dimensionality of the object upon which it is drawn. Or i may make work which is simultaneously figurative and conceptually abstract. In all cases the goal is to build a relationship between the subject matter, the representation of the subject and the materiality of the object which reveals something about what goes on beneath the surface of my own consciousness.[] --Galanop (talk) 19:33, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
