[edit] Request to provide proper credit for my images (or to remove the images from Wikipedia)

I could not find out how to post on this talk page, so I'm doing my best to attract my attention to theft of my images from my website and posting them on Wikipedia without my permission and without any credits given. My website has been linking a lot to Wikipedia.org. Example: http:// www.banknotes.com/fr.htm => scroll down to "History of France" link. All of my gallery country pages are linking to Wikipedia's history articles and some other articles. I'm linking to all the history articles giving exposure to Wikipedia and Wikipedia is not being fair. I've noticed many banknotes from Banknotes.com were (maybe still are) being used without any credit or link given. Here is an example of the many:

This is the banknote I scanned and posted in my free public gallery: http:// www.banknotes.com/DK57.JPG

This is the same image that's been stolen (no credit given, not even asked a permission) from my site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:200kroner.jpg

Many images on Wikipedia's "Gallery of Banknotes" (and on many other wikipedia banknote pages as a matter of fact) are stolen from Banknotes.com: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallery_of_banknotes

I can provide hundreds of examples, but I think one example is enough to stop this theft and to correct the situation.

I can display many more pages on Wikipedia where my banknotes are posted improperly. I wouldn't mind providing banknote images to Wikipedia, but not to pirates and thieves.

Therefore I request removal of ALL banknote images from Wikipedia that were taken from Banknotes.com OR provide proper credit for each image or a group of images on each Wikipedia page.

I expect a response. You can email admin (at)banknotes (dot) com .

Regards, Audrius

I will try to put references in the coming days. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 23:09, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] How current are the currencies?

"These banknotes are the current banknotes that are in use today." Belgian Francs and Austrian Schilling are featured in this gallery. Don't Austrians and Belgians use Euros these days? If so, either the sentence above should be changed, or the Austrian and Belgian entries should be deleted from this list.--Sluzzelin 15:40, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

fixed. --Chochopk 21:05, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Best design

Any thoughts on the best designed current note or series? Enlil Ninlil 23:44, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

United States large size educational series. don't have a ref infront of me, but look in the Official Blackbook Price Guide to United States Paper Money or something like it, they'll have em. Joe I 10:02, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
In terms of design, Swiss franc without a doubt. Surinamese gulden is also nice. --Chochopk 11:50, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
I think the Brazilian real,Swiss franc, Sri Lankan rupee are quiet good. Enlil Ninlil 07:48, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Duplicate entries

This is why I think it is better to include the "duplicate entries". Sometimes 3 images that show the same thing may each have its own "strength". For example, one may have better brightness setting, the second may have higher resolution, and the third may not have the annoying "specimen" across. Since none is "better" in every way, I think it is only fair to include all. If you believe one is better than another in every way, then please go all the way to request for deletion. But the good thing about including duplicates is that it exposes the need for deletion, if any. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 22:34, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

The page already contains many, many photos, so the burden of proof should be on the person who wants to add a duplicate to explain what they bring to the article. I can understand that there may be cases where duplicates are useful (for example, because of security features, a note may look different under different lightning conditions), but it should not be the majority. Moreover, it may be confusing to the reader who may not notice at first glance that some images are duplicate, and I think there is a clear advantage in having a well-ordered collection of all the notes, without duplicates. In the case of Swiss notes, we have the full "official" set, downloaded from the website of the Swiss National Bank; I don't think there is any need to keep the duplicates. If needed, we can refer to the commons, where all the images are available for those who want to see all the different perspectives. Schutz 08:09, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
What if the dupliate images are from en, but not from commons? Btw, I have plans to break this up by continents, like the coin gallery. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 11:08, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
If they are free, they can (and should) be moved to commons, which is the best place to store this kind of medias. If they are here under fair use, then we should not have duplicates (we are very unlikely to be able to justify using both of them under fair use). You have not replied to my other comments; should I assume that you agree with them and that I can remove the duplicates of Swiss banknotes ? I have looked at them again and do not see them bringing anything to the gallery. Schutz 11:26, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I guess you can remove them. But can I ask you one favor? When you remove duplicate ones, can you add them to my to do list, and I'll either move them to commons, request for deletion, or come up with something to manage them better. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 12:23, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Done, and put them on your todo list. Note that both images are on commons already, and the corresponding category there [1] is pretty well sorted. Schutz 15:20, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] User-Created Images?

Is is permitted for a user to photograph an image of a banknote he may have in possession and upload it to this page? I am concerned that the notes may be copyrighted or I could get booked for counterfeiting. RideABicycle | Talk | 17:06, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Not only we have to be concerned with copyright, but each bank has their own rules on how images of their curency can and cannot be used. So, it would help what country's banknote are you trying to take a picture of. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 07:34, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
I've got North Korea, Pre-Taliban Afganistan, Zaire, and Cuba. I'm pretty sure it'll be ok, but I want to make sure. RideABicycle | Talk | 01:59, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
The Taliban and the Zaire bankbotes are fine, probably not DPRK and Cuba (for now, let me check). User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 04:19, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Taking {{Template:Money}} into consideration, I presume we can add whatever notes we choose. RideABicycle | Talk | 23:58, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
What I am trying to get it as currency that isn't being printed anymore would not be a problem, since if someone tries to fake it, it will be easier to spot. But, with Cuba and the DPRK, we just need to be sure what rules they have on their currencies. I am not sure if the Foundation's new rules is going to impact what I said in the past, but I am just trying to make sure that whatever effort you are putting into the scanning of the images isn't going to be a waste of your time. [edit] UK Banknotes

The United Kingdom's banknotes are some of the finest and longest established in the world. Why are they not included?? Mindstar 10:41, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Copyright issues. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 15:21, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:10 PLN.JPG

Image:10 PLN.JPG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 01:27, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
