The Galway Suburban Rail (Irish: Iarnród Bruachbhailteach na Gaillimhe) system is a planned one-line, three station suburban network that will operate between the city of Galway and the commuter town of Athenry, both in County Galway, Ireland. At present, there is no station in the Galway suburb of Oranmore, though one is planned for 2008 under Transport 21. Commuter services between Galway and Athenry are planned for 2008, Oranmore station will also open some time in 2008, meaning it will be served by suburban rail from some time in 2008 also. There is also some hope that services will be extended to the town of Tuam, in north County Galway, Gort, in south County Galway, and to Athlone, in County Westmeath/County Roscommon.

This whole project is part of the re-opening of the Western Rail Corridor, under Transport 21.

[edit] At present

Currently, there are 'commuter' services from Athlone to Galway, via Ballinasloe, Woodlawn, Attymon and Athenry. There is one train leaving from Athlone for Galway at 07:10 (arriving 08:20) every Monday to Saturday, and one train leaving Galway for Athlone at 21:40 (arriving 22:44) the same days. It is important to note, however, that it is possible to get on a Dublin-Galway train in Athlone and get off at Galway, and to get on a Galway-Dublin train and get off at Athlone, but these are not exclusive 'commuter' trains, and won't always stop at the same stations as the 'commuter' trains will.

It is unknown, at present, if the planned suburban rail system will continue to Athlone, or if this service will continue, or be upgraded, after the new line is open.

[edit] Similar proposals

In addition to providing the city with suburban rail, there are also strong and popular proposals to bring a light rail system to the city and its immediate environs, the Corrib Light Rail system. The government have announced they are to carry out feasibility studies for light rail in Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford.
