Galima Shugurova

Galima Shugurova (Russian: Галима Ахметкареевна Шугурова) is a Soviet Individual Rhythmic Gymnast born in Omsk in 1955. She was the third Soviet Rhythmic Gymnast to become World All-Around champion and the first ever European All-Around champion in 1978. Shugurova is an ethnic Tatar. She first appeared on the world stage in Varna, Bulgaria in 1969 at 14 years of age, by the end of her debut she had two golds - rope and ball.
Four years later she had enormous charisma and an excellent standard of gymnastics. In Rotterdam, Netherlands in 1973 she shared the world crown with the Bulgarian Maria Gigova. Both of their Ribbon routines at this Championship were to the same music - a piece from Bizet's ballet "Carmen".
