Galician nationalism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Galician nationalism is a political movement that claims the recognition of Galicia as nation. It is also a social movement with the cultural and political currents. Historians recognize, throughout the centuries, from prehistory till recent days, the Galician ethnic group creation and its singular unity. The political current referred to as Galician nationalism was born at the end of the 20th century as cultural movements which rapidly turned in political parties.

[edit] Ideology
Inside Galician nationalism, two main ideological currents can be found:
- First, the biggest one, that claims a large autonomy, or the transformation of Spain in a federalist state.
- The other one, independentist left-wing, campaigns for independence for Galicia from Spain and a break with the model of capitalist society.
Both currents have points in common, like for example, the defense of Galician language (some of them defending the reintegracionism) and Galician culture, the official recognition of the Galician nation, and the defence of the galician speakers Municipalities of Asturias and Castile and León intregration in the Galician Autonomous Community. On the other hand it is important to mention that in Galicia leftist nationalism predominates front conservative nationalism, which is a difference respect Catalonia and the Basque Country, where political right nationalism is more relevant. This leftist nationalism covers since radical positions (Nós-Unidade Popular) till moderate ones like the left-centrist Galician Nationalist Bloc.
