Galachipa (Bengali: গলাচিপা ) is an Upazila of Patuakhali District in the Division of Barisal, Bangladesh.

Galachipa is located at 22.1639° N 90.4306° E . It has 49982 units of house hold and total area 1267.89 km².

As of 1991 Bangladesh census[1], Galachipa has a population of 286307. Males constitute are 51.36% of the population, and females 48.64%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 137818. Galachipa has an average literacy rate of 29.4% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate. [2]

Galachipa has 13 Unions/Wards, 145 Mauzas/Mahallas, and 230 villages.

Galachipa Upzilla is very famous for academic affairs. There are many good as well as famous schools and colleges here. Galachipa High School is one of them. This is one of the most famous schools of greater Barisal. Website of the school:www.galachipasecondaryschool.net[1] The school has many achievements and she is the holy symbol of knowledge of Galachipa Upzilla. The school is now 75 years old. The Diamond Jubilee of the school will be celebrated in 2008. All are welcome very cordially.

Galachipa Degree College is another famous institution of Galachipa. Galachipa Girls'Secondary School, Haridebpur Secondary School, Charkhali Secondary School, Galachipa Girls' College, Galachipa High Attached Primary School, Udayan School etc. are some famous institutions too.

In Galachipa there were and are many pungent politicians as:

Late Abdul Barek Miah: Ex-MP of Galachipa. He was the President of Galachipa Upzilla Awami League. He was a great organizer and popular leader.

A.K.M. Jahangir Hossain: Ex-state Minister, Ministry of Textiles, Ex-MP (3 times). He is a central leader of Bangladesh Awami League. Mr. Hossain is a famous ex-student leader. For a time interval he was the General Secretary of Bangladesh Chattro League, Students' wing of Bangladesh Awami League. He has been elected MP from Patuakhali-3 (Galachipa-Dashmina) for three times (1991-96, 1996-2001, 2001-2006). He is very popular in the area.

Shahjahan Khan: Ex-MP. He elected MP in 1996 from Galachipa-3. He is a leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He is popular among his party men.

Galachipa feels pride for her journalists. Many famous journalists are the son of her.

Late Abdul Gani Mia is the pioneer of journalism at Galachipa. He was very famous for his co-operating mood and non-communal strategy.

Late Mufti Munir is another very famous photo-journalist. He achieved National award several times for photo-journalism. He was the photographer of "The Daily Sangbad" and "The Daily Ittefuq". He was so innovative.

Altaf Mahmud is a very strong journalist leader. He is the president of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ). He has been elected for four times.

Shankar Lal Dash is another famous journalist of Galachipa. He is now in "The Daily Janakantha". He is a specialist in Coastal Affair specially in Government Land Management. He has many exciting reports on "Charer GanoManush", "Charer SangramMukhor Jibika", "Charer Banchona", "Khash Jami Bandobaste Durniti" etc. His great innovation is "Mousumi Bibaho (Monsoon Weeding)" and "Mantha (A group of people living on boat and depend on fish for their livelihood)". Mr. Dash has got "MamtajUddin Memorial Award", the most prestigious award in Journalism in Bangladesh in 2007 for his reports in Janakantha. He has also got "Salimullah Memorial Award" and "Prakritojon Award". He is now working on floating people of the society. He will go a long way definitely.

Parvez Nadir Reza is one of the promising journalists. He is now working in "Channel One", an electronic media and famous TV channel in Bangladesh. He is a reporter of the channel. Mr. Reza is highly creative and very ingenious. He has got "Manobadhikar Padok" for the report "Seven Mystrious Children of Ex-DIG". He will also go a long way.

Galachipa Upzilla is highly river densed. Rivers and canals are here and there in Galachipa. The Bay of Bengal is very much colose her. However, Galachipa is situated on the bank of the "Ramnabad". Due to the river Galachipa is a famous port fot rice and other crops. A lare "Haat" is used to take place every Satur Day of the week based on the river. It is one of the largest "Haat" of greater Barisal. Another very famous river of Galachipa is "'Agunmukha'". This is dangerous as well as beautiful. In Bengali we can say "Sundarer Majhe Voyongkar". There are also many other dangerous and beautiful rivers in Galachipa.

Galachipa Upzilla is famous for her "Charanchal". "Char" means land disconnected from the mainland by rivers. These lands are highly disconnected and the river route is the only route. Road traffic has not been arranged yet. Some "Char"s are larger while some are very smaller. Rangabali, Baher Char, Barho Baishdia, Choto Baishdia, Chalitabunia, Char Kajal, Char Shiba, Char Montaj, Char Biswas, Mayar Char, Char Karfarma, Char Lakshmi, Char Kukrhi Mukrhi, Latar Char, Char Kalagachia etc. are very known to all. The land of these "Char"s are very fertile and crops grow heavily here. But most of the people here are poor and deprived. They also suffer from "Information" greatly and their style of life is very low. The people here are mainly "Bhumiheen" (landless). Journalist Shankar Lal Dash is continuing research on this area. He is a specialist of "Charanchal".

    • Subrata Roy: The most popular young among the people of the area. He is an enchanting scriptwriter, director, set designer, planner, motivator, negotiator and many more. He is now working in BRAC as a Field Organizer (Officer Level). He is the founder of Galachipa Theatre.
    • Rusel & Kamrul: Though they are two but virtually they are one. These two are great organizer and drama player. They are co-founder of Galachipa Theatre. They can even cross the Everest if necessary.
    • Asim Shil: A great singer. He has achieved 3rd prize in National Level competition in 1998 in Tagore's Song.
    • Sandipan Dash: He is a genius in Computing. In Galachipa he is second to none in this field. His idea is much clear and he can solve problem very quickly. Not only in Galachipa but also in Barisal town he is popular for his computing capability.
    • Sudeb Das: This boy is very much innovative with his high observation capability. He is a good orator as well as a very efficient scout. He has achieved 2nd position in Instant Public Speaking Competition in Divisional Level in 2005.
