Gakushi-kai (学士会) is alumni society consists of bachelor, master, doctor, professor, associate professor and president of Kyu-Teikoku daigaku. Gakushi-kai as the organization means bachelor club in Japanese, but all bachelor's degrees of the Japanese cannot sign up for this club, because this gakushi means a bachelor's degree based on the law in the Taisho 7(=1907). That is, then, a bachelor's degree was limited to the few elite who graduated from the Imperial University[1]. To this day, it is possible to sign up is limited to the person of above-mentioned condition.

On April 18, 1886, the graduates of Tokyo Teikoku University opened a testimonial dinner for Prof. Katō Hiroyuki in Koishikawa Shokubutuen, then in the conversation they discussed to organize the convivial meeting of the grade. The same year, the alumni society was established. The first administrative director was Sakatani Yoshiroh, member of the Kizoku in Gikai. In those days principle members were, Toyama Shoichi, professor of Rika-dai, Yatabe Ryokichi, same as on the right, Kano Jigoro,..etc. In the successive chief director, there were Nanbara Shigeru, president of Tokyo University, Arisama Hiroya,a chief of the Nihon gakushiin.etc.

There are about 80,000 members. The present chairman of the board of directors is Shigemitsu Dandō, former Justice of the Supreme Court. The current officers are Yasushi Mieno, former governor of the Bank of Japan, Shigeaki Hinohara, honorary director of St. Luke's International Hospital, Gaishi Hiraiwa, previous chairman of The Tokyo Electric Power Company, Hisashi Owada, judge of the The International Court of Justice and the father of Crown Princess Masako, and Uichirō Niwa, chairman of Itochu.

The headquarter is located in Gakushi kaikan, and there are many facilities, the boardroom, the diner, the beauty shop and so on in the inside of the building. There is annex in the campus of University of Tokyo, Bunkyo-ku Hongo. These facilities are used for the hosting of a society activity and an alumni association, a wedding, a lecture and so on. In the annex, the almost users were involved parties of University of Tokyo, in the summer, the beer garden is great success.

However almost alumni of “Kyu-Teikoku daigaku” after graduated became a member of reunion of affiliated university paid annual fee. From such a reason, they are not always become a member of both alumni reunion. Especially the members lives in country have not opportunities uses the facility, hence they have no advantage to pay a membership fee (4,000 yen per year). In such a situation, to improve the incentive of the signing up of the graduate, headquarters gives an e-mail address to the applicant of the student in Imperial University, and when he sign up after graduation, the same address can still be used. In addition, for supporting of changing or getting job, it establishes graduate society ACS (学士会ACS Gakushikai ACS?), and for the member, and start a web site for OB.
