Gaia (also known as Gaia: One Woman's Journey) is an album released by Olivia Newton-John in 1994. For the first time in her career; the album was entirely written by Newton-John herself. In addition to songwriting duties; Newton-John also co-produced the album.
The album was the first since Newton-John was diagnosed with breast cancer on 1992; and as such, many of the songs were influenced by her experiences - especially in the tracks 'Why Me' and 'Not Gonna Give Into It'. Newton-John's passion for environmental and conservation issues also served as a major influence.
The album was recorded in Australia in 1993 and released via several independent labels internationally; except in Australia where Olivia was still signed to Festival Records.
One of the most critically acclaimed of Olivia's career, the album is a firm favourite among fans. The All Music Guide hails the album as "the most honest and inviting album of her career."
Two singles were lifted from the album; 'No Matter What You Do' which was an Australian Top 40 hit; and 'Don't Cut Me Down'.
Olivia later opened up a Retreat and Spa in Byron Bay, Australia called Gaia.

[edit] Soundtracks
A few of the songs from Gaia made their way onto the soundtracks of Olivia's films. 'Don't Cut Me Down', originally written about the plight of rainforests, was used in the film It's My Party, a film about AIDS. The song surfaced as a double metaphor for being cut down in ones prime. The song 'Trust Yourself' was used over the end credits of Sordid Lives in 2000 and in the TV Movie The Wilde Girls the following year.
