[edit] My RfA

I'm still in discussion with my nom, so i'm not transcluding yet. It should be transcluded today. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 21:01, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mall articles

Hi Gadfium, I know you are busy, and thus not too eager to take on other peoples jobs. But I saw that you were positive about saving the (or some) of the Auckland mall articles. For personal reason, I would not like to edit them, or be connected too much. I have done some research to allow you or others to add notability and references to them, if you are interested in working on them:

Downtown:

[1] - provides 2005 retail sales figure at very bottom.

[2] - minor note, not really adding to notability, talking about the huge billboards around it.

[3] - actually, if you have the time, extend the signage discussion, as discussed in this article - even if the Wikipedia article calls it a bland building covered with garish signs - thats info, and adds to the article's quality. Also has some minor details about the centre referenced.

St Lukes:

[4] loads of minor and major info about St Lukes AND Downtown. Gives info on the time of name rebranding of Westfield Downtown. Has LOADS of info on St Lukes expansion and data on the mall itself.

Westcity

[5] Stage One of its existence.

[6] Info on the The Warehouse move into it.

[7] first NZ Village Skycity cinema (link to the Village Skycity article in Wikipedia too, please), same article also has info on the cinema in St Lukes.

[8] Mall turnover

[9] Some more info about its value.

[10] Already historical article, info on its previous ownership.

PS: When you add the reference summaries of the bdcentral articles, maybe use the info here to show the credibility of the source. The site may also be useful with its search function for the other malls.

I'll try to do something with this later today.-gadfium 19:59, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
I live in Perth so can relate. :P I have a 2004 Auckland street directory from when I visited so that helps a bit. Orderinchaos 05:04, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
BTW thanks for that list, appreciate it :) I'll do what I can with them over the coming week or so - managed to get Waitakere Mega Centre into some kind of shape. Orderinchaos 03:57, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Oceania

G'Day! I'd be grateful if you could take a quick butchers at our Oceania article where User:Corticopia seems to believe that neither Polynesia nor Micronesia should be mentioned in the lede - his view seems to be that Australia is the major and most important constituent...Gaimhreadhan (kiwiexile at DMOZ) talk • 01:08, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

My butchers tells me that a compromise version appears to exist with Mela-, Micro- and Poly-nesia all now appearing in the first paragraph. Even if this is not quite to your satisfaction I think your major issue (which I agree with) has been addressed.-gadfium 03:53, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Be Nice! :-)

Image:Qxz-ad15.gif

Keep it in mind - Bennyboyz3000 03:55, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Is this about any particular incident?-gadfium 04:10, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Perhaps the original intention was not, but might I point out User talk:Deliciously Saucy could apply; in future, be careful not to bite the newcomers. Anthøny (contacttalk) 13:04, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Princes wharf

Totally confused at your removal of the cat. Please see my edit summary of the revert. Ingolfson 10:49, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Ah, got it now. Weird that a 'Wharf' company article exists, but none for the structure. Oh well, Wikipedia. Fixed now. Ingolfson 10:54, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wanganui Collegiate School

Can you confirm the the IP address used by the user Craigconsidine, during the recent vandalism, is: 210.55.84.199 ? Thanks Bart 01:02, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, but I have no visibility of IP addresses for users who log in, and our privacy policy wouldn't allow those few users who do have such visibility to reveal it.-gadfium 01:35, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Smile

[edit] In line with recent discusssion...

...I am asking you to do something ;-) Please ban this user: User:Rothgarc. I warned him first, but then realised that his three edits have all been vandalism. I think that is enough for a temporary ban. Cheers. Ingolfson 09:54, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Most people get several warnings before they get a block. In this case, he hasn't edited since your warning, so there is no grounds for a block. Quite frequently, a vandal stops as soon as they see the "You have new messages" banner, as they realise that someone is watching them. Anyway, I'll keep an eye on them. Incidentally, listing them as {{user|Rothgarc}} or {{vandal|Rothgarc}} rather than [[User:Rothgarc]] makes it easier for me because I have direct links to the relevant pages: i.e. Rothgarc (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · block user · block log).-gadfium 19:16, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:MargaretWilson.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:MargaretWilson.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Videmus Omnia Talk 03:27, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

I discussed the use of the image and made a fair use case at Image talk:MargaretWilson.jpg, and on the image page itself. This was clearly a waste of my time, as it seems that no fair use case can possibly succeed, if the people in the photo are still alive. You have wasted my time and your own by suggesting that deletion of the image was open to discussion. I am disillusioned.

In this case, the image was being used entirely within the terms of its license, which said that anyone could use the image so long as it was not for misrepresentation. This does not qualify as a free image within Wikipedia's policy, but it really is one, and should not be subject to the same restrictions as apply to a photograph taken from a newspaper against that newspaper's copyright claim, or an album cover, which are the sort of cases that fair use is supposed to apply to.-gadfium 03:39, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

I disagree with this deletion. Please let me know if you take it to deletion review, which I encourage you to do. Tyrenius 04:18, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
I agree with Tyrenius, take it to DR, please Brian | (Talk) 04:23, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

I have requested a deletion review. Comment may be added at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2007 August 23 gadfium 05:09, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] St. Paul's Cathedral, Dunedin how to tag?

Recent edit is a jolly good read but may lack npov, certainly needs wikifying and sources. Not sure how to approach the issue, want to be nice to an obviously new and meaning-well person. Nankai 06:42, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Unfortunately the addition was a copyright violation from the cathedral's own site. I've removed it, while keeping minor improvements from the anon. Because the addition was a couple of weeks ago, it's unlikely the anon will see any messages posted to their talk page, so I haven't bothered warning them.
I appreciate your desire to be nice to a new contributor. Just because they pasted a copyvio into Wikipedia doesn't mean they weren't trying to improve the article. There's a small possibility that they own the content they pasted, and a large chance that they meant well, but don't understand copyright.-gadfium 07:00, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] NZ watchlist

Hey,

At the meetup, you mentioned the new zealand vandalism watchlist, using related changes. Where abouts is this page?

Thanks! Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 01:15, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Can you explain what I have done wrong?

(I am not sure if I am doing this right.)

I have received the message:

User talk:89.242.84.41 Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, one or more of the external links you added do not comply with our guidelines for external links and have been removed.

I had added what I considered to be relevant links. I had based this judgement on other links I had seen throughout Wikipedia. Can you explain which links were wrong or should I not have added any links at all? In the meantime I will refrain from adding any more links.

All the links I added were related to articles or recipes on my web site.

I am not sure I will be able to find this page again and I had better not publish my email address here. If you need to conatct me you will find my details through my web site www.hub-uk.com (perhaps you will delete the web address after you have read it). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 89.242.84.41 (talk) 09:42, August 23, 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Helen Clark protection

Hi Gadfium, have you seen this NewstalkZB/TVNZ article? Apparently, you're a censor! - Gobeirne 18:43, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:MargaretWilson.jpg

I see this has now made its way to Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion/2007 August 28 and have left a keep comment there. I wonder whether it should be retitled to reflect the occasion, rather than just the name of one individual. Tyrenius 12:59, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Vandal

Gadfium, the user 203.97.2.58 has been vandalising a fair bunch of stuff in the last few days. Any way to get him/her banned? Randomkiwi 01:00, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

I've blocked them for a month. It's probably a school, and there's a long history of warnings and previous blocks, including a previous month-long one.
If you see further problems, please report them to WP:AIV; you'll get a quicker response than reporting to any single admin. Also, when you report vandalism, it makes it easier if you link with a template like {{vandal|203.97.2.58}}, which produces 203.97.2.58 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · block user · block log), so I have the links to the appropriate pages right here.-gadfium 01:13, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
