Gad's Hill School

Gad's Hill School in Kent, England was formerly the home of Charles Dickens, it became an independent day school in 1924. It currently has about 370 pupils on roll.

Classes from nursery to year 11. Two classes in each year from year 6 upwards. Maximum number of pupils in each class 20.

Until 2004 The senoir school was complety girls, since then boys have been mixted in.


Since 2000 a Head Girl was elected at the annual Prise Giving. However since 2000 it has changed The Head and Vice of School is awarded. This changes each year and new pupils are awards this honour. The Plaques in the school halls show the names of every Head since the school opened in 1924. There is no visible award for the Vice Head.

At Price Giving canes are given to the Head and Vice with their name inscribed in the silver plate, this is kept in school and appears at social and formal events.

Rumour has it that the Heads Cane has a sword within this has been proved wrong.


Gad’s has many traditions, in year 11 the pupils sign the lead on the roof which has many names from years past, this started when there were plays and dances in the grounds, the pupils would come and write their names to memories.

The evening before the Christmas holidays the pupils and families attend Rochester Cathedral for the annual Carol Concert. Here chosen pupils read the lesson of the Bible, the choir sing traditional carols but a chosen pupil is honoured to sing the first stanza of ‘Once in royal David’s city.’

On the last day of the winter term the whole school have an annual Cross Country run. The enfants run around the rugby fields a few times. Juniors run a 2.5km and the seniors run a 3.5km. This is always a fun and entertaining event, of course there are prise for first boy and girl for senior and junior.

Art (Enfants), Design Technology (Junior- Senior), Information technology- ORC Nationals (Senior), Science, English, Mathematics, French, Geography, History, Combined Cadet Force (CCF).

There are may after school clubs to attend and gain expirence and friends, every day of the week.


At present moment Head Teacher is David Craggs.
