In the American Military, a G-2 officer is a staff officer responsible for intelligence in a military command staff. A G-2 would typically be a Field Grade officer and would be an assistant to a Division level commander. Below the G-2, the S-2 handles equivalent tasks at the Brigade level, while above, J-2 and C-2 are at Pentagon level.
Although high ranking officers, G-2s are Staff officers (compare Command Officers.) They do not lead troops in the usual sense and are only found within Headquarters.
G-2 refers to the Staff Officer personally, and to his own supporting troops.
