Güira de Melena is a municipality and city in the La Habana Province of west-central Cuba. It is located on the southern shore of the island, bordering the Bay of Batabanó. It was founded in 1779.[1]
The town is south of San Antonio de los Baños and east of Alquízar.
The principal economic activities include agriculture, especially tobacco; the city has cigar factories. Other agricultural products are potatoes, bananas, pineapples and other tropical fruits, and dairy products.

In 2004, the municipality of Güira de Melena had a population of 37,838.[3] With a total area of 178 km² (68.7 sq mi),[2] it has a population density of 212.6/km² (550.6/sq mi).
The municipality is divided into the barrios of Gabriel, Norte Pueblo, Sibanacán, Sur Pueblo, Tumbadero and Turibacoa.[1]
