Fwgoebel is busy in real life and may not respond swiftly to queries. |
I don't have nearly as much free time as I had in the past, but I still check in daily to watchlist and when I have enough time to work on an article, I'll do it.
A wikibreak won't keep me from reverting vandalism if I see it in my watchlist. Especially if it's in one of my projects.
[edit] Sandbox
US 4 in New York is now underway; if you can assist please add. I know there's a lot to go into this; I have notes for a complete junction list, and I have other stuff to add.
[edit] About me
(Born November 1, 1965 in Gloversville, New York) Frank Goebel lives in Troy, New York. Previously, he lived in Guilderland and Clifton Park.
Frank has many interests. He is a Jaycee, an Exhausted Rooster, a JCI Senator, a bowler, bowling coach, bowling league secretary, as well as a road enthusiast. On wikipedia, he has recently discovered and has contributed to the New York State Routes Wiki Project, among others.
[edit] Education
Graduating from Broadalbin Central in 1983, Frank received an A.A.S. degree in Visual Communications from Fulton-Montgomery Community College in 1985 as well as a B.S. degree in Trade Subjects Education from SUNY College at Oswego. He also received an M.S. degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University at Albany in 1992.
[edit] How I got started with Wikipedia
Last summer, having seen the movie Cars, I was inspired to do a trip of at least a good portion of the Mother Road, which I did in August. I used many on-line and print resouces to ready my trip and select actual places to eat and sleep, and at the bottom of the Route 66 article, saw a listing for all of the US Highways. Looking into those that enter New York, I found that they had intersection lists, eventually discovering that many routes in New York were not yet there. Shortly after my Route 66 trip (which was sadly not complete) I wound up with a disability (and therefore, a ton of free time) but was able to do a lot of driving in the late months of 2006 and early 2007 during which I drove the full lengths of the routes listed below, starting with NY 30A near where I was staying, and went from there.
[edit] Milestones
November 13, 2006: Joined Wikipedia.
November 13, 2006: Edits 1-29, inclusive, created article for NY 30A, learning through experimentation.
November 13, 2006: Edit 30, my first edit to an existing article, coincidentally NY 30. I did not plan this.
November 16, 2006: Added myself to the New York State Route Wiki project.
November 20, 2006: Added Rotterdam/Schenectady to Five Corners, to which I would link the NY 159 article.

November 27, 2006: Placed five corners link on NY 159 article. Started changing intersection template on articles using old NYSRInt.
December 28, 2006: Edit 500, on the talk page of NY 242, about the change of the intersection template. Yawn.
December 1, 2006: Completed removal of NYSRInt template, which has been since deleted.
December 3, 2006: Began moving Thruway trailblazer onto same line as Interstate highway shield, doing same for I-86/NY 17.
December 4, 2006: Added sub-questions to the Wikipediholic Test.
December 5, 2006: Finished standardization of Thruway trailblazer placement.
December 12, 2006: Reverted Hornell, New York twice, once for vandalism, the second for a vanity entry.
December 14, 2006: Created article for NY 28N, including research about Theodore Roosevelt. First article with many external links.
December 15, 2006: Placed Harrison Street NY 920 article, my first of many NYS Reference Routes, the closest to my boyhood home.
December 19, 2006: Made first addition to US Jaycees article.
December 21, 2006: Noted removal of Palisades Interstate Parkway shield from intersecting routes, would begin talk on our Project page. Spawned discussion in Wikipedia talk:Fair use.
December 28, 2006: 1000th edit. Created article for NY 911H/Altamont Avenue.
December 28, 2006: 1001st edit. Celebrated Edit 1000 (yes, this includes talk, but not image uploads) by adding these milestones.
December 31, 2006: Joined the Interstate Highways Wiki Project. Overhauled I-787. Joined the US Highways Wiki Project as well.
January 1, 2007: Started a sandbox experiment to bring the US 4 article into compliance.
January 8, 2007: Finished re-work of US 4.
January 13, 2007: Received Senatorship from New York Junior Chamber. Not related to wikipedia directly, but inspiring more work on USJC article, hopefully collaborating with other Jaycees.
January 18, 2007: Modified the Template:Infobox NY Reference Route to include a browse function, since I did one that's also a decommissioned route.
February 28, 2007: Aged out of the Jaycees. Modified user info.
March 11, 2007: Commenced sandbox work on a US 4 in New York article.

[edit] Route articles modified
This list is only for those routes where I made some substantial change to the content. If I just changed the intersection template to the NYint format, they won't be listed here. There are just too many of them. But for the below, I made the changes because I know something in addition to, or in correction of, what was already there.
Note the listing above is incomplete. Also, it's not put up here to brag, just to let others know what I've done here (and what I'd like to do). Many have done far more than I; in fact, I am not responsible for any of the images (including the state route shields). Anyone is welcome to visit any of those routes’ articles and comment. As for placing new route articles into operation: So far, I've driven every highway in its entirety beforehand. I suppose I could add historical NY 99, although I didn't take notes (but I remember it well).
- I'm between jobs and don't have as much time as I once had, but here's one thing I can do prior to the other two (below) which were here longer. At the Wikipedia:WikiProject New York State Routes, there are some new required content guidelines. My personal to-do will be to update those articles that I personally created (listed above) to the newest standards (essentially, that which is now required to be in a NYSR article). I'll do them in order of creation, which is the same as the above table.
- I’ve done just about as much as I can do regarding new state touring route articles (because I prefer to drive them first). However, there are a number of reference routes out there, so one by one I’ll do them (I’ve done several, listed above).
Create an article about the NYSDOT reference markers. Then, wiki-link existing NY state route articles to them where the words “reference marker(s)” or similar text appears. I may need an infobox....Done, November 25, 2007.
[edit] A philosophy on editing
It’s pretty simple: I’m not bothered to find out that something I created, or changed, was modified by someone else. I put it this way: While I did take some time to do a little research, thought, consideration, and keystrokes into putting together an article (even if I know it’s not complete), I consider it a compliment when it’s altered. Someone else thought that much of what I did that they took the time to make it better. And that’s the approach I take when I a modification of something that’s already there. It’s the same when I take something good I see out there and use that as a basis for something I create: It’s excellence being replicated.
Vandalism notwithstanding. of course.
