Future Trunks (未来のトランクス Mirai no Torankusu?, known simply as Trunks), is a character who first appeared in the Dragon Ball manga created by Akira Toriyama, more popularly followed by Dragon Ball Z. Trunks is introduced to be a half-Saiyan boy from the future, his father is Vegeta,[2] the prince of the extinct race of fictional aliens called the Saiyans, and his mother is Bulma,[3] the heiress of a massive company called Capsule Corporation. "Mirai" is the Japanese kanji for 'future'. Trunks' seiyū is provided by Takeshi Kusao. In the English language dub, he is voiced by Eric Vale. In the Ocean Group dub, Alistair Abell voiced him.

In Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout, he is voiced by Skip Stellrecht.

This is the first Trunks that the readers and/or viewers ever see in the Dragon Ball manga (the section he is in is titled Dragon Ball Z in North America) and the Dragon Ball Z anime. Trained by Future Gohan in an alternate time line, Trunks travels through time to seek help from Goku to prevent the Artificial Humans No. 17 and No. 18 from ravaging Earth. Trunks is a determined and loyal warrior. His name is a play on "trunks", a type of male clothing.

[edit] Appearance

Trunks appears tall and slender although still muscular. He favors his maternal side by having light blue eyes and light purple hair. From the time he first appears to the time he enters the Room of Spirit and Time, and after the Cell Games, his hair is cut short in bowlcut style. From the time he exits to the end of the Cell Games, his hair is long. His hair grows unlike full blooded Saiyan hair (due to the Room's year-in-a-day effect).

Early on, Trunks wears a black sleeveless shirt and black pants along with his blue Capsule Corporation jacket and yellow boots, as well as a sword in the sash worn round his back. After he exits the Room of Spirit and Time, he starts to wear attire similar to his father's, white gloves, white boots with yellow tips, a skin-tight blue jumpsuit, and Saiyan battle armor, which was given to him by his mother Bulma (present time line). Trunks could only transform up to Super Saiyan before entering the Room of Spirit and Time. But afterwards, his training gave him the ability to reach further levels of Super Saiyan, which are located between Super Saiyan 1 and Super Saiyan 2, the Super Saiyan 2nd Grade and also the Super Saiyan 3rd Grade, although this form proved to be too slow because of the amount of muscular weight: because of this flaw, he was unable to even touch Cell in his Perfect form even though his power had increased in a spectacular way (Cell even acknowledged the fact that he could be stronger than him in this form, although he demonstrated a similar transformation to Trunks' implying otherwise). Later on, having survived Cell's encounter by telling him he and his father Vegeta could become stronger by training, he no longer took his Super Saiyan 3rd Grade form and stayed at the Super Saiyan 1 level, which is more well-balanced between strength and speed, according to Goku himself.

[edit] Personality

Trunks' personality is distinguishable from the other characters because he originally was seen to be cautious and calculating. He often thinks through things and plans, advising against random action because of the horrific events in his own time line. Originally, this is shown when he told Kuririn to take the blueprints of the androids first before destroying Dr. Gero's laboratory and also in his reluctance to take action unless Goku is present. As the series continues, Trunks becomes more confident and less cautious, but never loses his rational thinking, he is also seen learning from his mistakes and poor judgment, such as his choice to use the Super Saiyan 3rd Grade, but making him incredibly slower due to his muscular mass (see Appearance section). Despite Vegeta's arrogance and pride, Trunks still cares for his father and even though it was due to Vegeta's pride that he let Cell absorb #18 and attain his perfect form, he still goes to desperate measures to distract Cell so Kuririn can take Vegeta to safety.

Unlike his father or alternate time line self, Future Trunks is often shown to be very polite and well-mannered. This is clearly shown in the original version through his speech with his parents, as he is often heard using the polite form of Japanese phrases when addressing his allies.

[edit] Character history

Future Trunks is first introduced just before the Android Saga where he fights and kills Freeza and King Cold (Freeza's father).[4] Afterwards Future Trunks along with Earth's heroes (Z Warriors) greet Son Goku, as he arrives from a long journey in space.[5] He also warns Goku of Dr. Gero's # 17 and # 18 and that Goku would contract a deadly heart virus.[6] Later, Trunks, along with the present timeline Gohan and Bulma, discovered Cell's cocoon that came from a mossy and damaged time machine. It is found out later in the series that it is owned by the other Future Trunks and he was killed by Cell after that Trunks killed Android 17 & 18 in his own timeline. It is probable that this alternate Future Trunks didn't train in the Room of Spirit and Time. Cell transformed himself back into an egg while activating first Future Trunks' time machine to go back to the present timeline (to suck 17 & 18 using his tail, absorb their powers and achieve the Perfect Cell form). Cell came years early before the arrival of Future Trunks in the present timeline. Future Trunks then returned to his own time after the present timeline Gohan killed Perfect Cell alone. Future Trunks returned to the activated 17 and 18 in his own time for a second and final rematch. His increased power makes short work of the androids and, later, of Imperfect Cell.[7] Also, Future Trunks is responsible for defeating some of the most powerful villains in the saga such as Freeza, his father King Cold, Android 14, and Androids 17 and 18 as well as Cell in his own timeline. [8]

A movie about Future Trunks, "The History of Trunks", explains his early life and about his troubled past at the cause of the Artifical Humans, #17 and #18.

[edit] Differences

By growing up in such a bleak future, Future Trunks is much more serious during his childhood. He also becomes much closer to the Future Gohan from his own timeline because Goten doesn't exist in that time line. Future Trunks looks up to and respects Future Gohan, but their present selves are not as close as their future counterparts.

It is unknown how Trunks would react to meeting Future Trunks, however this occurs in the video games Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors. In Budokai 3, as well as in Shin Budokai, Trunks states that it is "Just like having a brother" where as in Legendary Super Warriors, Tenkaichi 2 and Tenkaichi 3 he does not even realize it is his future self, and the two have a sparring match. They did meet in the manga and anime, however, when Trunks was still just a baby; once when Future Trunks rescued him and Bulma from Dr. Gero's attack, and once when Future Trunks came to Capsule Corp. before the Cell Games announcement. For a minute, Trunks incessantly pulled on Future Trunks' hair.

In Future Trunks' timeline, Trunks grows to be more sympathetic and caring than the younger Trunks in the present timeline. This is mostly because Vegeta's impact on his son in the present, when Trunks is very serious and arrogant as a youth, he also carries most of these traits into Dragonball GT as well, but is still mostly similar to Future Trunks when older.

[edit] Abilities

Trunks has demonstrated the ability to easily utilize the power of buku-jutsu, or "lighter than air" skill, which enables to fly at will. Trunks has also displayed the ability to suppress his power level, as seen when he suppresses his power level down to 5, tricking Mecha Freeza's henchmen into believing that he was weaker than he actually was. Trunks uses some signature attacks in the manga but none of them are actually named. The well-known attacks he has are in fact taken from the Dragon Ball video games such as Budokai or Budokai Tenkaichi ; from there come the names like "Burning Attack", a powerful blast Trunks creates by performing a series of rapid arm movements, then releasing an energy ball from his hands, with his index fingers and thumbs touching. In the games he also performs several others attacks, not used in the original manga ; "Finish Buster" and "Buster Cannon. The "Heat Dome Attack", which looks similar to the attack he used to kill Cell after returning to his own timeline ; and the "Shining Sword Attack", which mimics his movements when he killed Mecha Freeza the first time he came in the present timeline.

[edit] Forms and transformations

When Future Trunks is first introduced he transformed into a Super Saiyan.[9] Future Trunks uses this form while in battle. He achieved this form after he saw the dead body of Future Gohan (although in the manga he is shown to already have the ability to transform by the time of Future Gohan's death), killed by the Artificial Humans from his own timeline. After training in the Room of Spirit and Time, Trunks is able to push further his Super Saiyan 1st Grade transformation by expanding his strength, thus creating an enormous muscular mass along with a great increase in power. Trunks uses this form to fight Cell's Semi-Perfect and Perfect forms respectively but afterwards reverts to using the normal Super Saiyan form after Cell revealed to him that his bulky muscles diminish his speed, making it harder to hit him.

[edit] Appearances in other media

[edit] Video games

Future Trunks has appeared in many Dragon Ball related video games. He has also appeared in crossover games such as Battle Stadium D.O.N and Jump Ultimate Stars In Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai - Another Road he was given his own storyline involving what would have happened had Majin Boo appeared in his future timeline. He is also set to appear in Dragon Ball Online.

In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3, Future Trunks was able to transform to Super Saiyan 2.
