I regret to report that the "world's largest artificial pit" may have been exceeded in size by another open pit coal mine that is in Russia. An interested party might research the depth, surface area and excavated volumes of these two competing pits. It is possible that the one that is deeper is not wider, which would create the opportunity for each to be the "world's largest."

Also, someone might add information about the Geology Institute that is located in Fushun, a national center of excellence for research in its field. 71.156.102.198 01:53, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
