(Iredale, 1936)

Fusinus genticus is a species of spindle snail, a large sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Fasciolariidae, the spindle snails and tulip snails.

Note: Gastropod taxonomy has been in flux for many years. This is especially true currently, because of new research in molecular phylogeny. Because of all this on-going change, different reliable sources can yield very different classifications, especially within certain poorly understood groups.

[edit] Distribution

This species is endemic to New South Wales in Australia, and to Northland in the North Island of New Zealand.

[edit] Habitat

It is found in waters of about 40 m, and is sometimes accidentally caught in crayfish pots.

The shell is large but of rather light build, broadly fusiform, with a nodular carina below the middle whorl height, and a rather long straight siphonal canal.

The shell coloration is dull white with faint yellowish-brown zones, and when living, has a thick brownish-olive periostracum.

The shell height is up to 160 mm, and width up to 59 mm.
