Fury³ is a video game developed by Terminal Reality and published by Microsoft in 1995 for Microsoft Windows. It is not a sequel to Terminal Velocity, but the two games share basic game mechanics and use the same engine, although it was redesigned to run natively under Windows 95.

Later, an expansion pack called F-Zone was created, and eventually a sequel titled Hellbender, was made.

Players assume the role of a pilot named Councilor flying a fighter craft to eight worlds (many based on real places, like Mars and New York) controlled by a militant robotic force called Bions. Players fight three missions on each planet. Each of the missions involves destroying vital military targets in order to halt the Bions´ progress on the planet. Players must then destroy either one or two Guardians who are the commanders of the particular Bion invasion force. Once players are done with one planet, they then move on to the next one.

The Bions are not independent thinking machines; they are controlled by the Guardian(s) of the respective planets. The Guardians are far more intelligent than the lesser Bions--their IQ equals that of a super-computer--and destroying them will halt the Bions on the planet.

There are seven weapons in all, the main being the Servo-Kinetic Laser (SKL), the player's only weapon at the start of the game. Other weapons such as Vipers (VIP) and Rapid-Fire Lasers (RFL20) are available to collect throughout the game.

[edit] Prologue

These are extracts from the manual of the game:

During the IP Wars, the Terrans designed a race of bionic warriors known for their cunning and their brutal strength. Physically superior and ruthlessly aggressive, a single troop of Bions could eliminate the inhabitants of a planet within days.

The Bion war effort saved the Coalition, but nearly destroyed Terran. After the war, Bion aggression could not be contained. Peaceful coexistence between Bions and Terrans proved impossible. The ensuing Bion Wars are known for their brevity - and violence.

In 2832, the Coalition ordered complete Bion dismantlement, and instituded Terran's renowned Council of Peace - a military defense force inferior to none....Unknown to the Coalition, a few Bions survived and have assembled on a distant planet called Fury.

Their plan is to seize seven more Coalition planets whose resources will help them attain their ultimate goal - total domination of space from the Bion Fury outpost.

As a member of Terran's Council of Peace, it's your mission to stop them. Welcome home, Councilor.

(IP means inter-planetary here.)

[edit] Weapons

A total of seven weapons are available to the player including five powerups as well.

ServoKinetic Laser (SKL) - "A direct-fire laser known as the 'Serv'. Always available. Always dependable." This is the starting players weapon. It fires two rapid fire laser beams and can easily destroy small enemy fighters and ground units. The standard variation has infinite ammo and fires from two points alternately. Collecting pickups upgrades it to firing from two points simultaneously and in its most powerful form it fires from four points. These versions have finite ammo.

Dispersion Cannon (DC14) - "Fires in a spray pattern and is good for strafes. Even more powerful than the Serv." This weapon fires small spread projectiles that take the appearance of Shuriken. Not the best for accuracy attacks.

Rapid-Fire Laser 20 (RFL20) - "The twentieth iteration of the most powerful direct-fire laser. Will leave them begging for mercy." When first picked up it takes on the same appearance as the SKL but with a blue beam, slightly more firepower and a much more quickly moving projectile. When a second power up of the RFL20 is picked up the cannon fires with four separate beams. Like the SKL it has infinite ammo in its most basic form but can be upgraded to more powerful versions with finite ammo.

Dead-On Missile (DOM) - "This missile shoots straight ahead. Aim carefully and don't look back." The first available missile. Twice as much power as the RFL 20 but no homing capabilities. Successful hits require high accuracy.

Viper 5's (VIP) - "Its infrared will track any target. Guaranteed!" When fired the Viper locks onto the nearest heat signature and tracks it for a long period of time, usually results in destroying or severely damaging the target.

Bion Fury Missile (BFM) - "This Super Missile was first developed by the Bions during the IP wars. These babies do major damage." Similar to the Viper in that it locks on to and tracks the nearest target, but deals much more damage.

F³ (FFF) - "The most deadly triple-stage Smart Bomb destroys everything within range. Restores shields automatically and has an IQ of 2000, better than yours." Only one of these can be carried at a time. When fired the F³ destroys everything in your field of view and fully replenishes your health. It's best to save it for more dire situations.

The following powerups are:

Shield Boost - Strengthens the player's shield by about 25%.

Shields Restored - Fully restores the player's shield.

Invincibility - 30 seconds of total invincibility.

Invisibility - 30 seconds of invisibility.

Turbo Thrust - works like a jet afterburner. They let you out run all enemies and even the projectiles fired by your own ServoKinetic Lasers! the more you collect, the longer you can boost around the world.

[edit] Planets

There are a total of 8 planets for the player to liberate of Bion forces:

Terran - Terran wasn't always a Utopia. Ravaged by the IP Wars and then by the Bion Wars, Terran's peace has been hard-earned. And now the Bions have returned... Terran resembles Earth and its name is derived from Terra. It has destructible palm trees; destroying them deducts points from the player's score.

L24-D - L24-D contains the largest repository of carbonium, an explosive with 48 times the power and radiation damage of a fusion bomb. The Bions want it for their perilous missile, the BFM. Upon leaving this planet, it blows up. A possible explanation is the carbonium found in L24-D's surface. This planet resembles Venus due to the posionous chemical it has.

Ares - The isomorphic decay of Arean red sheol attracts wormholes - shortcuts through space and time. The Bions plan to mine the sheol, control the wormholes, and monopolize all intergalactic travel. This planet resembles Mars. Ares is Greek equivalent of the Roman war god Mars.

New Kroy - New Kroy is a city planet that's reputed to be impenetrable. It's buildings are grown from polyKroy, an organic synthetic that is transparent, grows into any shape and is nearly indestructible. New Kroy is an anagram of New York.

Sebek - According to ancient Sebekian scriptures, the Death Ankh grants its possessor immortality. This planet resembles Ancient Egypt due to the pyramids and wide open desert.

Vestra - Once the penal colony for Bionis insurgents, Vestra is now the Bions' military training ground. Being a large asteroid(or planetoid), it was constantly bombarded by smaller asteroids which the player had to avoid. It blew up after the player leaves it. An explanation is that it could have been smashed by a much larger asteroid.

Tiamat - Tiamat's oceans contain the last repositories of attainable phosphorus, a fundamental energy source in all living and bionic things. Like Terran, this planet has destructible vegetation.

Fury - Fury is the Bion deep space outpost. The largest of the planets, Fury is surrounded by a deadly nebula which prompted the Bions to erect a purplish force-field around the planet. The player destroyed the force-field generators leaving Fury vulnerable. As the player completed his mission and left, the nebula swarmed over Fury and destroyed it.
