Since 1978, we at the Stowe Center have been working on a new theory for the analysis and development of Historic Landscapes. We call this method the, multi layered or mylar layered system. This new system is a system that can and will replace the outmoded system that was developed in the 1960’s. In this paper and in the dvd which attends it, we will attempt to explain this system: ie., how it works, and why it leads to an historically accurate, fuller, more highly educated, historic landscape which is far more interesting and works as a better teaching and communication tool to visitors of historic sites.

We who serve the public at historic sites end up being not only educators, but must also be story tellers, and entertainers. Although this statement may irk the anal retentive descendants of Calvinist ministers who often haunt these sites, the cold hard truth is that we are in competition with a society that is being fed MTV, rapid fire java images on their computer screens, constant images of sex and violence on their tv screens every hour of every day. We cannot draw visitors to our historic sites only to pour castor oil down their throats and bore them. Therefore the problem with developing and analyzing the historic site is manifold. How do we stay historically accurate, remain interesting, able to hold the visitor’s attention, and still be able to educate and tell many stories about a historic site and the people in history who have inhabited the site. The challenge becomes even more complex when we have historic sites that have existed over hundreds of years, and housed many different people of interest during different periods. Sometimes these sites have been worked on by landscape architects and artists of note as well. And certainly their stories and contributions also need to be preserved and told as well.

Over the last thirty years at the Stowe center we have developed a system which is fairly easy to use, makes great common sense, and can result in an historic landscape which can address all these problems successfully. Our historic landscape has been a great source of education, harmony, and enjoyment. I use the word enjoyment full well realizing that I may be offending some in the historic community.
