FUNET is the Finnish University and Research Network, a backbone network providing Internet connections for Finnish universities and research facilities. It is governed by the state-owned CSC, Scientific Computing Ltd.

The main backbone connections are implemented using 2.5 Gbit/s Ethernet cables which will be upgraded to a 10 Gbit/s optical fiber in around 2010. Subscriber and auxiliary connections are mainly 622 and 155 Mbit/s. FUNET is connected to the outside world through NORDUnet. The most important foreign connection from Helsinki to Stockholm has a capacity of 10 Gbit/s.
