The Fundamental category is the "root" category, a top-level place to start when browsing Wikipedia categories for articles. This is the top level in terms of encyclopedia article function and content.

The top level of Wikipedia's category system, in terms of the functional category hierarchy, is Category:Contents.

It is possible to display the entire tree (really a directed graph) of child categories of the sub-categories (e.g., the grand-child categories of the Fundamental category). To expand the tree, click the plus sign [+] to the left of the sub-categories. To shrink the child sub-categories, click the minus sign [-].
