„non sea osado de venir contra él."

8 Con efecto, en este sentido hemos llamado
Fuero juzgo ó Fuero de los jueces al libro en que se re-
copiláron a las leyes de España establedidas por nues-
tros reyes godos; y las colecciones conocidas con los
nombres de Fuero viejo de Castilla, Fuero de Búrgos,
Fuero de Sepúlveda y otros varios de esta clase, que
publicaremos en el apéndice.

9 Lo mas notable del citado exôrdio es que has-
ta la mitad del siglo XIII la mayor parte de los rey-
nos de Castilla no tuviesen fuero, juzgándose por
fazañas y albedrios. A primera vista parece incierta
esta proposicion del rey don Alonso, porque los di-
plomas conservado hasta nuestros tiempos demues-
tran la exîstencia de muchos fueros que suelen lla-
marse Cartas pueblas, y de otros dados para mejor
gobierno de los moradores de lugares ya poblados.
Particularmente tenemos una coleccion de leyes que
don Miguel de Manuel publicó con el título de
Fuero viejo de Castilla, en concepto de haber sido for-
mada en fines del siglo X ó principios del XI por el
conde don Sancho Garces para todos los dominios
castellanos, corregida por don Alonso VII en las cor-
tes de Náxera, don Alonso VIII en las de Búrgos,
don Alonso XI en las de Alcalá, y don Pedro, que fué
su editor.

8 In effect, in this sense we have referred to as Fuero juzgo or Fuero de los jueces ("fuero of the judges") the book in which are compiled the laws of Spain established by our Gothic kings; and the collections known by the names of Fuero viejo de Castilla ("Old Fuero of Castile"), Fuero de Burgos, Fuero de Sepúlveda and various others of this class, which we have published in the appendix.

9 The most notable thing about the cited preface is that until the middle of the 13th century the greater part of the kingdoms of Castile have not had fuero, and rendered judgement on precedence. At first view this proposition of King Alfonso appears uncertain, because the official documents conserved until our times demonstrate the existence of many fueros that ought to be called "founding charters", and of others given for the better government of the inhabitants of places already populated. In particular, we have a collection of laws that Don Miguel de Manuel published with the title of Fuero viejo de Castilla, in concept of having been formed at the end of the 10th century or the beginning of the 11th by Count Don Sancho Garces for all the Castilian dominions, corrected by Alonso VII in the Court of Nájera, King Alfonso VIII in that of Burgos, King Alfonso XI in that of Alcalá, and Don Pedro, who was their editor.
