Fu'ād II, King of Egypt and the Sudan – Aḥmad Fu'ād (Arabic: الملك أحمد فؤاد الثاني Aḥmad Fu'ād) – was born on 16 January 1952. He ascended the throne on 26 July 1952 upon the abdication of his father King Fārūq I. He reigned for less than a year until 18 June 1953. King Fu'ād II was modern Egypt's last monarch and the last of the House of Muhammad Ali which had ruled since 1805. He was overthrown when the monarchy and the aristocracy were abolished in the 1952 Revolution and the Republic of Egypt was proclaimed.
King Fu'ād II was less than a year old at the time of his ascension to the throne, thus, he was never formally crowned. He became king following the abdication of his father, King Fārūq I, and joined his family in exile after the monarchy was overthrown in 1953. The Council of Regency headed by Prince Muhammad Abdul Moneim represented him in Egypt while he was in exile. King Fārūq I had hoped that his abdication would appease the anti-royalist forces in the country, and that the baby king could serve as a unifying force for Egypt. Both gambles proved incorrect.
After being deposed, King Fu'ād II was brought to Switzerland, where he was to be raised. Nowadays former King Fu'ād II continues to live in Switzerland.
[edit] Marriage and children
In 1976, the King married Dominique-France Picard (née Loeb, born 1948), the daughter of Robert Loeb and his wife, the former Paule Picard. She converted to Islam and assumed the title Queen Fadila of Egypt. The couple had three children before they divorced.
Their children are:
- HRH Muhammad Ali, Prince of Said (born February 5, 1979)
- HRH Princess Fawzia-Latifa (born February 12, 1982)
- HRH Prince Fakhruddin (born February 19, 1987)
