Bundesliga (plural: -ligen) means Federal League or nation-wide league) is the name for the premier league of any sport in Germany or Austria. Used on its own, Bundesliga usually refers to Germany's highest football league.

  • M = "Meister" (master or champion)—defending Bundesliga champion
  • P = "Pokal" (cup)—winner of that season's German Cup
  • N = "Neu" (new)—newly promoted clubs
  • Three German teams were entitled to UEFA Cup berths. The other berth went to Alemannia Aachen, a Second Bundesliga side. Alemannia lost in the German Cup final to Werder Bremen. However, under UEFA rules, if a country's cup winner qualifies for the Champions League, the losing finalist is granted the cup winner's berth.
  • Kaiserslautern's points total includes a three-point deduction for a violation of financial regulations.
