Fryup is separated into to small valleys or 'dales' these are called, Great Fryup Dale and Little Fryup Dale. Most people live in Great Fryup Dale, with Little Fryup only having 8 or 9 farms and cottages. Great Fryup doesn't have any shops or even a pub, there is a phone box, post box and Village hall. There is also a local cricket pitch and Quoits pitch.
An old woman at Fryup was well known locally for keeping the “Mark’s e’en watch” (24 April), as she lived alongside a corpse road known as the “Old Hell Road”. In this, a village seer would hold a vigil between 11 pm and 1 am, in order to look for the wraiths of those who would die in the following 12-month period.
The curious name of Fryup comes from an Old Norse ladies name that was 'Fria' and 'Up' is an old fashioned term for small valley.
