Fruitvale Junior High

Fruitvale Junior High is a middle school located on the west side of Bakersfield, California, at 2114 Calloway Drive. It is part of the Fruitvale School District. Fruitvale Jr. High has received the Federal Excellence in Education Award in 1990 and was a recipient of the California Distinguished School Award in 1986, 1990, 1994, and 1999. Fruitvale Junior High students are also very active and successful in speech, math, drama, history and science competitions at county, state, and national levels.

[edit] Greenacres Elementary
Fruitvale Junior High originally in opened as Greenacres Elementary in 1980. After the completion of Discovery Elementary School, Greenacres became a middle school and has since been the "Wildcats".
[edit] John Hefner, Fearless Leader
Recently, Fruitvale Junior High principal of 35 years, John Hefner, retired at the end of the 2007 school year. John Hefner was then succeeded in the position of Principal by Susan Richardson in the following school year.

Through the National History Day program, Fruitvale has cultivated its students into lifelong learners with a fundamental understanding of University level research. Under the direction of Principal John Hefner, Fruitvale Junior High has achieved recognition at the county, state, and national History Day levels in the past 10 years alone.Students have interviewed such people in history as Edward Teller, father of the atomic bomb, as well as prominent V-2 German engineers that helped bring America to the moon in the 1960s.
Fruitvale Junior High has achieved a well-known and respected name for itself within the History Day community. Fruitvale has played an active role in expanding the History Day program and increasing student activity county and state wide. After all, "It's not just a day, It's an experience."

Among other state competitions, Fruitvale Junior High School has proven its might at the CA State Science Fair consistently for almost 10 years. After achieving top marks in the county science competition, Fruitvale students have moved on to the state competition with winning projects almost every time.
Students research vast areas of science and conduct in-depth research and perform original and innovative experiments.
