The Frontier Route travels through Northern Ontario from the Manitoba-Ontario border, along Highway 17 through Kenora, Dryden, Ignace, and Thunder Bay, Ontario, to the Highway 11/Highway 17 intersection in Nipigon, Ontario.

The Route follows Highway 11 all the way along its long routing through Northern Ontario, through the towns of Geraldton, Longlac, Hearst, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Kirlkand Lake, New Liskeard, North Bay, Huntsville, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, and Orillia, before terminating at Highway 400 in Barrie, Ontario. Until Highway 11 was downloaded south of Barrie, it continued to its interchange with the Gardiner Expressway in downtown Toronto, Ontario as its southern terminus.

This trail also follows the Voyageur Route for much of its length.
