Froma Harrop (born March 18, 1950 in New York City) is an American writer who normally "displays an independent voice on politics, economics, and culture."[1]. She is a backer of Hillary Clinton for the 2008 Democratic Nomination.

She is best known for her nationally syndicated column which appears twice-weekly in more than 150 newspapers including the Seattle Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Denver Post, Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle, Detroit News, and Newsday.[2] Media Matters for America ranks Harrop 20th among the top 100 syndicated columnists for total reader reach and 14th based on average circulation.[3]

Born in New York City, Harrop was raised in suburban Long Island.[4] After graduating from New York University, she worked on the financial desk at Reuters, covering business and the Federal Reserve.[5]

Harrop later became a business editor for The New York Times News Service.[2] She returned to her reporting roots as a business writer for the Providence Journal in Rhode Island and subsequently joined the Journal’s editorial board, where she remains a member.[6] Harrop currently resides in Providence.[2]

She frequently appears on television and radio, including the Lou Dobbs Show, Tucker on MSNBC and PBS’s White House Chronicles.[7]

Her column has become a regular feature on the RealClearPolitics.com website.[8]

Harrop has written for such diverse publications as The New York Times, Harper’s Bazaar, and Institutional Investor.[2] Her columns have been published in several book anthologies.[2]

Her views have been described as going against the conventional wisdom, as "left of center," "fairly independent," "with a libertarian streak," "issue oriented," and as the Heartland Institute's "favorite lefty."[9] In 2008, she has been a supporter of presidential contender Hillary Clinton[citation needed].
