[edit] Thoughts on bandity
A lot of the junk going thru Afd is "bandity" (band vanity): people making articles about their bands. Here's a place for thoughts on bands.
[edit] Types of bands
- Pretend band - does not even attempt to play songs
- Garage band - does play songs, but not in any kind of public venue
- Bar band - gets paid to play in bars and similiar venues
- Regional band - like a bar band, but a wider range of venues, presumably more money, etc
- Encyclopedic band - band with some degree of being significant. Allmusic often knows about them. By this time they've released records (usually on known labels), and they have significant amounts of real media coverage. These kinds of bands should sometimes have articles about them.
The lines between these are not always very sharp. For example a band who's played at an open mic might still be a garage band (or even a pretend band), despite having played "in public". We get bandity articles about pretty much any of the types, probably most often garage bands. You'd think the first couple types would be completely unverifiable, but if having a myspace or other similiar page counts as verifiability, even pretend bands are sometimes verifiable. My own bar band is somewhat verifiable, but not nearly enough for an encyclopedia. Our shows can be verified through local press and websites, sure, but this tells you nothing about the band other than that it plays. A few more details could be verified by our own website, but personally I don't see that a website that some band writes about itself can help establish significance.
[edit] List of Wikipedians...
Goofy idea: Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians whose bands don't have articles about them
Tongue-in-cheek list of bands (but we want actual bands here). This would be an illustration to newbies who made a bandity article that there are tons of perfectly good bands out there that don't have articles about them. Drive home the point that having a band is kind of like having a website: it's not actually a claim to fame. SOME bands are significant, sure, but just being a band is not.
