Talk:Frits Bernard
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
All of the sources appear to be from Bernard's organization. It is okay if some of them are, but I believe there is a rule that there must be some references not self published, whether self published by any source or by the subject of the article. Lotusduck 19:32, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
- Neither Martijn nor NAMBLA are Bernard's own organization which was Enclave. The relation between Bernard and these two resemble rather that of Magnus Hirschfeld with Stonewall or ILGA. During his lifetime, Bernard critized especially NAMBLA, which he regarded as a purely ephebophile organization, for being, just like actually paedophile PIE in the UK, too pushy and unscientific. Bernard's and Brongersma's achievements, among which the most tangible was the lowering of the Dutch AoC to 12 in 1990 (being reverted back up to 16 in 2002 solely in order to comply to EU standards), had been due to not hastily antagonizing the public, the media, and legal forces by sensationalist demands lacking any grounding or backing in the national scientific discourse, rather working as publishing scientists and cultural figureheads closely and patiently together with these three entities until the Netherlands got under serious sensationalist attack from the US during the 1980s. In spite of this increasing foreign influence, their work still had enough effect to influence legislation in 1990, and without the legal and media influence from English-speaking countries, Dutch AoC laws would have probably been completely dropped by the mid- to late 1980s, with Germany and France following soon after. In order to get a glimpse of what was going on in continental Western Europe at the apogee of Bernard's and Brongersma's careers, you might have a look at a Time Magazine article entitled Cradle-to-grave intimacy, dating September 7th 1981 (including a number of other professional voices that were aware of the European situation), which is today misrepresented as a piece on incest, violent rape or coercion, and/or penetration of minors while in fact it dealed with none of those issues. --Tlatosmd 22:17, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
