Friesoythe is a town in the district of Cloppenburg, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the river Soeste, approx. 25 km northwest of Cloppenburg, and 30 km southwest of Oldenburg.
[edit] History
In 1945, it is believed that allied Canadian soldiers set civilian houses and a church on fire in reprisal for the death of the unit's commanding officer in battle.
Maj.-Gen. Christopher Vokes, commanding the 4th Canadian (Armoured) Division (his division was operating in Germany in mid-April) ordered the town to be destroyed. “We used the rubble to make traversable roads for our tanks,” Vokes wrote much later.[1]
