Me again. I'm rather uncomfortable with a number of the 2007 awards; they don't seem to have much, if anything, to do with the Black Music heritage (e.g. Gabrielle Union, Susan T Buffett.) Do you have an opinion? Pdfpdf 03:44, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Anita Baker

Howdy. It's not in your field-of-interest, but ... Anita Baker did a cover of What a fool believes which, in my opinion, is the best version of the song I've heard. I managed to "acquire" a copy of the track itself fairly easily, but I can't find any information about it, or references to its origins - not even a date recorded. Could I impose upon you to have a quick look and see if you can find anything? Much obliged. Pdfpdf 13:59, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Postscript: Where are you up to with Music in Omaha? I'm afraid I disappeared down the Saddle Creek rabbit hole, and then got even further distracted, and then the OBMHoF 2007 Awards were posted on the website, and then ... Pdfpdf 13:59, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

I dug, I found something you'd posted on a forum with this question, and I cannot find anything specifically about Anita Baker singing "What a Fool Believes". Aretha Franklin? Found her. George Michael citation? Found it. But I can find nothing - not a thing - mentioning the remote possibility that Anita Baker sang this song. Give me another one when you get it. – Freechild (BoomCha) 16:20, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I don't feel nearly so bad that I can't find things if you can't either!!
What was the George Michael citation?
And where are you up to with Music in Omaha?

Also, I have concerns about the notability of Slowdown (venue). I'll work on that, but want to give you a chance too, as well. – Freechild (BoomCha) 16:27, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Oh. I suppose we could roll it into Saddle Creek Records#Slowdown (venue)?? Pdfpdf 16:32, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Also, aside from the above, I don't see anything notable about Slowdown Virginia. I am finding a lot of notable citations for the venue though. – Freechild (BoomCha) 16:30, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
I added some notability stuff to the Slowdown (venue) article - but it could use more.

Good.

Two suggestions:
Avoid in-line citations for off-WP links ...

I do. (Or at least, I am under the impression that I do!!) Where did you find one/some?

The second suggestion is to cite all the info you find whenever you add it ...

Mmmm. I'm less adamant about that one. Let's just say "I'm under the impression that I generally do.", but examples of where I haven't are easier to find than I thought they would be. Guess I need to tighten up on that one.

Just a few suggestions ...

Keep them coming; I always find them useful.

Give me anther Anita Baker-like fastball when you get a one - that was aggravatingly fun. (PS - I'm still looking - I've got some "feelers" out among musician friends. Was it a live recording by chance?) – Freechild (BoomCha) 16:47, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

No. I can email it to you if you wish?

Sure, go for it with the Music in Omaha article. It really needs work - and any citations you can find! Thanks!

OK. Will do.

Oh, and by the way, why hasn't your gracious friend from the OBMHoF replied to my email? Did you get my cc of it? Hmmm. – Freechild (BoomCha) 16:53, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

I assume that question is semi-rhetorical? I got a new computer yesterday, and haven't set everything up yet. I just checked my email. Yes, I did get your cc. Well, it's only just over 24 hours ago, and it looks to me like he answers his email in the morning, so there's a chance that you'll get something in the next hour or so. My 17:43, 21 July 2007 post above was two minutes before your 17:45, 20 July 2007 Claim Club DYK post, so it does not appear have been for an article that you already nominated. My Anna Wilson (madame) post did overlap, however. Your Claim Club DYK prompting post (above) was one of about 30 I posted at one time and culled from about 50 potential DYK prompting post at the "Good" articles proposed by bot list. Most of the people receiving the DYK prompting post are new to Wikipedia and do not know about DYK. The issue of suggesting someone make a DYK post came up before. To address this, we added the language "if you haven't already done so" to the prompting notification (see above). The best way to prevent your receipt of a DYK prompting post for one of your articles is to keep an eye on the "Good" articles proposed by bot list and put a line through your article's name if it appears on the list. You also might try to post a message at User_talk:AlexNewArtBot asking him to add a line to the Bot that excludes your posts from being added to the DYK |"Good" articles proposed by bot. -- Jreferee (Talk) 03:38, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] A modest proposal

It's been a while since I've done any major article reworking, but after reading the Tulsa, Oklahoma article, it dawned on me that it probably wouldn't take *that* much work to rewrite the Omaha article so that it could get FA consideration. Take a look at the Tulsa article; it's a very applicable model for any future work on the Omaha article. – Swid (talk · edits) 16:46, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

I've never committed that much work to one article, but I would be willing to participate in a campaign to take over the world - I mean, get Omaha considering for FA. I will start to rewrite the article ala Tulsa, and will look for you to chip in along the way when possible/interested. I don't know how many folks are watching it, but should we let folks know about said effort on the Omaha talk page? – Freechild (¡!¡!¡!¡) 08:50, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Child labor tags on Lowell girls

I don't know that the child labor category really applies much to Lowell girls. The title of the article is a colloquial expression, referring to 16–25-year-old women. [edit] Talk:Lester Abrams

What a peculiar system!

An arbitrary person (User:Ludahai, who's command of grammar is somewhat questionable) has come along to the LA talk page and has changed "WikiProject Biography" into "WikiProject Biography|class=B|listas=Abrams, Lester", only leaving behind the edit comment "(assess, add listas)" as an explanation/justification.
Further, although before they came the talk page said: "Please rate the article and, if you wish, leave comments here regarding your assessment or the strengths and weaknesses of the article.", after they left the talk page no longer displays that link, and the link on the "before" page is still red, suggesting they haven't left any comment justification.

So, have I got this right? Anyone can come along and rate an article, and they don't have to explain/justify their rating?

If so, what a peculiar system.
Pdfpdf 13:59, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

-- Assessing biographies --
First off, its great to hear from you - it looks like you've been busy.
Second, yes, you've got it right. Anyone can assess any article for any WikiProject, although its mildly discouraged.
I've written a couple dozen biographies of folks now, and I still remember that my first reaction to the rating was similar to yours, something to the effect of "WTF?!?" But then I learned that each WikiProject is responsible for assessing their own related articles. The idea behind the system is to give everyone a standard for developing articles they have common interest in. Here's WikiProject Biography's page on assessment if you're interested.
Oh, and don't take the ratings personally - they're supposed to reflect the quality of the article, which I've discovered has a lot to do with the length as much as the prose or information presented therein. A "B" rating means the article is on its way.
Keep in touch. – Freechild (¡!¡!¡!¡) 14:48, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Ahhh! The calming voice of experience.

Hi Freechild. Yes, I've been busy. (Or should I say, "occupied".) And I'm glad you're so positive about my return.

[edit] African Americans in Omaha, Nebraska

(Twice in the same week!) When trying to find something else unrelated, I came across this page. Knowing you have a "finger in this pie", I started reading.

  • After making important political and economic contributions to the city for more than thirty years, the first lynching of a black person in Omaha occurred in 1891, ... - I know what the sentence is trying to say or imply, but it isn't actually saying it. Also, grammaticly that first phrase has no subject, and its implied subject is not the same as the subject of the sentence.
  • The lynching of Willy Brown in 1919 ... The following century saw the emergence ... - The civil rights movement emerged in the same century, not the following century. I changed "century" to "decades".
  • On my screen there's a large gap of white space between the heading "History", and the start of the text.
  • Is the list of Notable African Americans in any particular order? If so, I can't spot one.

I fiddled with the references, too.
Well, I'll get back to what I was doing! Regards, Pdfpdf 14:48, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image source problem with Image:CAlogo.gif

Image Copyright problem

This is an automated message from a robot. You have recently uploaded Image:CAlogo.gif. The file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:31, 16 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If you believe you received this message in error, please notify the bot's owner. [edit] Anita Baker Aretha Franklin

It would seem that Aretha has released two (quite different) covers of WAFB(talk)!! -- Pdfpdf 00:00, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

I want to know where you found the two versions?
(Presumably you've read Talk:What a Fool Believes?)

Originally I found a sample of what I now call the non-1980 version. I didn't think much of it. Soon after (on Limewire) I found a version (wrongly) labelled "Anita Baker", which turns out to be the 1980 version. Now I can no longer locate the non-1980 version! However, there are stacks of references to the 1980 version:

So now I'm begining to wonder about the existence of the "other" version! Pdfpdf 07:16, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

What perplexes me is that you found info on Amazon - because I had looked there. Oh well. Congrats on such an obscure find. – Freechild (¡!¡!¡!¡) 13:12, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

I can't take any credit; I didn't find anything. As it says on Talk:What a Fool Believes, it was Slithymatt who listened to the mp3 and identified it. The reason you didn't find anything anywhere is because you were looking for a song by Anita Baker - a song that she has never recorded! To compound my ineptitude, I now can't even find the original Aretha version that I started with 3 months ago! (But thanks for the kind words.) Pdfpdf 13:23, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Oooohhh... well, then, if that's the case, I rescind my early congrats. I didn't read the talk page that closely.

[edit] Other "stuff"

Well then, if that's all done you must be on to some other wonderful obscure WP topic? – Freechild (¡!¡!¡!¡) 13:26, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] No offense intended

I am not entirely sure which DYK nomination you are referring to, but I never intended to offend anyone. I think you are referring to Lincoln Highway - am I correct? Might you let me know what offended you so that I can avoid the mistake in the future? I am actually serious about wanting the Buffalo Bill Ranch page expanded - I used to live out there and the ranch is in interesting place. I thought it would make a good article. For the ongoing discussion of how to choose DYK's, see Wikipedia talk:Did you know. We are doing a trial run of this "checking" process. Awadewit | talk 22:55, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
