[edit] Art Monthly Magazine

Art Monthly is a monthly British art magazine dedicated to Contemporary Art [1]. It was founded in 1976 by Peter Townsend and Jack Wendler. Peter Townsend was formerly the editor of Studio International. Jack Wendler formerly ran a gallery which specialised in Minimalism [2] and [Conceptual art][3]. The magazine is renowned for its left-wing stance.

The first issue of Art Monthly carried an obituary for Marcel Broodthaers [4] designed by Richard Hamilton [5] and included an artist’s page by Carl Andre [6] in response to the ‘bricks at the Tate’ controversy at the time.

Art Monthly was the first magazine to identify and debate the ‘[yBa]’ [7] phenomenon — the term was coined by Simon Ford in a feature entititled ‘Myth Making’ published back in March 1996 — and it was one of the first publications to investigate fully the implications of Charles Saatchi's [8] contribution of to the British art scene in the feature ‘Sense and Sensation’ by Art Monthly Editor Patricia Bickers in November 1997.
